I’m surprised that a “£1.1m home” is even worth mentioning these days (see the original link). Unless it’s trying to imply that he lived quite frugally for a Premiership footballer.

Round these parts a million would still buy a nice house - don’t get me wrong - but nothing that special.

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

Which makes one wonder how people get by on "the living wage". Or less......

He was arrested on both VAT and income tax issues but she only income tax. I wonder how come he would have a potentially huge VAT bill.

Hunch would be that he has his own Ltd company for things like image rights and she's an employee of the company drawing a salary/taking a dividend.

Depends if he's working as a contractor (rather than PAYE) - if so, he would then be charging Brighton for his services and the fee would be liable to VAT (which should then go to HMRC minus any vatable expenses), so basically 20% on top of his wages, but it's not 'his'.

Professional footballers are deemed to be employees of the club and not contractors

Happy to defer (I have no idea, but I have to say I'm slightly surprised they are PAYE)

likely to be separate image rights company then, I'd imagine

IR35 innit. He only has one employer, uses its facilities, can’t replace himself with an alternate, has his working pattern set by the club and is performance managed by the club. Couldn’t be a clearer case of being an employee, albeit I bet clever accountants keep trying to find an angle.

Too right - I was bang to rights, been at the same place 4 years, accountants still said "no, IR35 exempt" (permie now, BTW)

There's absolutely no way this over IR35/Paye

My money would be on the company dissolved a few years ago and what it was listed as doing.

I Googled it and HMRC has a paragraph devoted to professional footballers.

You're probably right about image rights being paid to a separate limited company though

Footballers are definitely PAYE.

This explains the image rights stuff quite well.

Wonder who's bitch Murray will be!
Don't touch state money cos they will
f**k you up.
Kill maim rape but touch their dosh and feel the wrath for sure.
