Had a lovely email from a Jim Kearney who says his father (also Jim/James Kearney) played for Palace around 1948.

Here is a photo he attached to an email.

This is the message I got from him:

Could you place this photo on the message board to see if anyone recognizes the players, coaches or the kit (year) please. 1948 or thereabouts...

He's not listed as a 1st team player but he may have been a reserve.

I don't recognise that kit, it's not like anything we've ever worn.

None of the players or officials look familiar to me and it looks like an amateur set-up.

Someone else might be able to help with reserve team players in that era.

Sorry, I can't help further.

This is a call up card to play in a game against Sevenoaks....signed by Jack Butler, manager 1947 to 1949...

The date matches up for 1948 but we weren't in the same league as Sevenoaks.

We drew 1-1 with Millwall at Selhurst the same day.

what age was your father in 1948? - could it be the equivalent of the reserve side/U23s

That card was fascinating so I dug out some programmes from the start of the 1948/9 season, Sat 28th August was the opening day of that campaign and we started with a home game v Millwall.

This is Page 3 from that programme, which mentions all new players and various fixtures but there's no mention of this A team game at Sevenoaks. The "A" team would be like a 3rd XI. Sadly no mention of Jim here.... but there will be on the next couple of posts:-

We played Watford on the following Saturday, 4th Sept, and while on Page 3 in Club Gossip there is talk of the previous weekend's fixtures, there is no mention of the A team game at Sevenoaks.

Moving on to Weds 8th Sept, we played at home v Bristol Rovers.

You will see in Club Gossip, paragraph 6, a young centre forward called KENNEY scored one goal in the return game against Brighton "A". I reckon that is Jim Kearney, if he was a centre forward?

Finally, these early season programmes displayed a full list of Palace players, headed "Many New Names", including 4 "on trial" - sadly Jim isn't among them.

I hope this helps and the mention of "KENNEY" in the previous post could be gold dust!

he would have been 26 in that year...think that he was the captain of Crystal Palace 'A"....he's the one in the front middle with the ball. They spelt his name wrong in the report...CURNEY!!
