That is just not true, as you confirmed West Ham have signed a midfielder in your post. What I meant was big signings, the type a lot of fans seem to demand. A few loans here and there but none of our rivals have signed a player that I look at and are gutted we didn’t sign.

There has been a certain degree of criticism about our transfer activity in this 'Window'. We are now 27 days into the 'Window' there are 20 PL clubs and I think there have only been 20-25 signings by PL clubs and quite a few are 'Loans' and not significant signings in terms of profile. We don't leave our transfer activity to the end by design. The whole process can be highly convoluted and frustrating with so many factors entering an ever complex equation and negotiations can be drawn out for weeks and even months.

It's easy for us all to get nervous and bemoan what we do as that is where all our focus is on. However, if you look at othe clubs in the lower half of the table I've not seen the likes of Swansea, West Brom, Stoke, Huddersfield, Newcastle or Bournemouth be able to make any significant signings yet. I'm sure their fans are also bemoaning their lack of activity in the window.

The problem is with the power held by the players and agents. It is easy to go out and buy the likes of Jach early in the window because nobody else is really in for them. If we were to go out and buy 5 unheard of players and do all our business before deadline day, Palace fans would lose their sh*t. When talking about the better known names like Dembele for example, we may well have offered a decent contract, but there is no way that his agent is going to let him sign it until the last minute in case a better offer comes along. This is where the natural pecking order comes into play. If Chelsea or Liverpool and probably even West Ham and Leicester decides they wanted Dembele, we would probably miss out on him, so that’s when you hope that you have had discussions with the next player on the list, and that if West Ham have pinched Dembele you hope that Leicester don’t pinch your next target. Eventually you will sign someone though and it will probably be someone that Brighton or Huddersfield were hoping to get.. I hear people saying , well just go out and pay big money to secure him, but personally I still think that the agent would advise his player to hang on until the last minute.

I was actually hoping we would buy more unknowns like Jach, primarily because that's where the value is in transfers and secondly, as you rightly say, there is very little competition for them. Yes, a marque signing would be lovely, but at what cost and would they actually be that much better than a hidden gem from abroad or the lower leagues? We are relying on Dougie to find us these gems and I'm rather suprised he hasn't unearthed at least one forward as of yet.

Sometimes you get players that people follow others opinion on rather than make a balanced opinion of their own based on the players actual performances. Mutch is one of these...rarely had a bad game...rarely turned possession over unlike others but he would always be a squad player...sometimes a club and a player dont 'fit'

Unless those who are criticising our transfer dealings are happy to see us pay inflated prices then unfortunately the last minute flurry of activity in the final hours of the window is a commercial inevitability. While purchasing clubs would all prefer to ‘do their business early’ selling clubs frustrate this by inflating the asking price. You can’t blame them for it, but it then encourages a game of brinkmanship. The usual outcome among reasonable parties is that all sides make compromises to reach a negotiated solution as the clock ticks down. Sometimes a party will act unreasonably, or push their negotiating position too far, and the deal breaks down. For as long as there is a transfer deadline, commercial realities will dictate that a significant number of deals won’t take place until the eleventh hour. So don’t criticise SP or the club; we are simply at the mercy of an immutable law of business.

May also need to consider that we might be a victim of our own success as we gave done better than we expected with what we gave at the moment compared to where we were after 7 games. Consciously or not that could take to edge off urgency and encourage the leadership to take longer and be a bit more cautious (rightly or wrongly). With regards to the desperation to sign a keeper this is very muddied at the moment due to it seeming very probable we have signed Guiata but it's a question as to if we pay 8mill Euros to get him for the rest of this season or at the end for free.
