Hennessy

Ward TFM Sakho Tomkins PVA

MCArthur Luka Cabaye

Townsend Benteke

Playing Townsend through the middle gives him more licence to shoot on sight!

The bench whatever 7 players they can cobble together they probably won’t get on anyway!

I reckon I’d go for this line up too.
Difficult to make a case for Sørloth or Rakip until we’ve seen them play.

I can't imagine Roy will use a back 3/5. In fact I can't recall him ever doing so, and he puts the team shape before the individuals, so I doubt you'll get your way this weekend!

I'd guess:

Hennessey
TFM Tomkins Sakho PVA
Cabeye Luka Riedewald McArthur
Benteke Townsend

Ok, let me be more precise. If he had in mind Ward for the left back position, he wouldn't have named both Ward (or TFM, depending on who was starting and who was back-up) and Souare on the bench on the same time. Seems like a waste of space to have someone there who you wouldn't send in no matter what. He'd have named....Mutch or someone

But Ward's a handy addition to the bench as he can cover all the defensive positions and, at a push, holding midfield. Souare could cover left sided offence and defence only. So arguably yes if there was a LB needed Souare would go in ahead off the bench but then that would also depend on how the game was panning out.

I just think Ward gives you that feeling of a 'solid' pro to start a game with, safe pair of hands. Souare's been out for a long while and wasn't he rumoured to be going out on loan? His style is more erratic and I think the emphasis till Wilf's back will be solidity and organisation to avoid getting beaten.

I agree that normally Roy is a strict 4-4-2 man however I think these are extenuating circumstances where we need to pick our strongest team and also bear in mind the opposition! For instance I don’t think Cabaye has the legs for left midfield especially if he is chasing Walcott or Yala for long periods!

Seriously? Please tell me that's sarcasm.

Hennessey

TFM, Tomkins, Sakho, PVA

Luka, Reidewald,

Townsend, Cabaye, McArthur,

Benteke

I feel that with both Luka and Reidewald in defensive midfield it will nullify Walcott and allow TFM and PVA to get further up the field.

I'm ashamed to admit that I forgot about Townsend, has he done enough this year? Recently his service has been good, but on the whole?

I wonder if he still has his pace. If not then no way can he play there. Not sure of his history either, has anyone got any details of where he has played in his career other than LB?

I agree about pace. If he doesn't have it then it can't work but no doubt the club will know. To be fair, he'd need pace to be a good full back because his positioning was never ideal even before his injury.

I believe he is a converted winger btw. I am probably wrong though.

I fully understand why Roy is wary of starting him as a full back. Roy is bound to worry that the accident could have made Pape a more hesitant player.

If he flakes one tackle, that can easily lead to a goal and a much more nervy defence. There's less risk if he has an attacking role.
