and when I read about what happens in the meat industry.. its effects on the planet, people's health and the conditions animals are kept in and their treatment it doesn't surprise me that more people are going the same route or beginning to cut meat and dairy out of their diet. Stories like this get very little mention in mainstream media... I mean 10 years ago when there were no vegans around very few people knew about what happened to animals in slaughterhouses, nobody knew about the health benefits of a vegan diet and very few people knew about the effects of eating meat on the environment. It's why more people are deciding to change their diets and shops are beginning to adapt to these changes by selling more plant based foods. People are changing because information is becoming more widely known - and as it becomes more known people are questioning what they have been taught. If this had been known 30 years ago we'd have even more plant based options and vegans in the world now. I'm sure that in another 30 years time there'll be a lot more vegan options around and a lot more vegans for you to argue against...

Quite right.

People making their choices based on information.

Meat eaters why are you uptight as you can simply continue as before.

It is a matter of choice, in the future if the trend continues then your habit will become expensive and with less availability.

But the market will depend on what the consumer actually wants.

I do, but I don't live in America. And you're reading subjective material.

The bold part is truly laughable.

I'm not arguing against vegans, i'm ignoring them wherever possible and letting them carry on as they like. It'd be nice if they could have the same courtesy to those that aren't.

Patrick Minford doesn't agree with you. He assumes cheap imports will kill off our own farming industries and "benefit" consumers given the cheaper prices. While his assumptions are all stupid and improbable, there has to be genuine concern that a behind closed doors sweetheart deal with the US would see our standards slashed and burned to allow this shoddy meat in, which would end up in ready meals, school canteens, cafés and the like where consumers have little choice or information over the provenance of the meat in question. Rather more worrying are the practices employed en masse across the US and to a lesser extent here, of routinely administering antibiotics to livestock to prevent illness and promote unnatural growth. 2/3 of all antibiotic usage worldwide is in the farming industry and is fast creating antibiotic resistant bacteria, and reducing the future efficacy of all antibiotics across the globe. This could easily lead to a situation in a couple of decades where illnesses that are treatable today will no longer be treatable and lifespans will start shortening again.

This is in addition to the impact on personal health from eating this meat, which is linked to higher instances of cancer, bowel disease and heart problems.

I hope that these practices will be eradicated and whatever happens with Brexit we increase the regulations of food safety and animal welfare. Meat should only be organic and free range and only eaten once a week tops for us to live healthily and sustainably and our regulations should be pushing the farming industry towards such a goal.

So basically bollocks then!

Isn't it the suggestion that at some time we may adopt these practices ourselves, not being party to EU standards anymore ?.

The EU has high standards and we have contributed to them.

Hasn't the government also undertaken to maintain current EU legislation, law and current practice as part of the separation?

You know exactly what subject your stuck on, and everything you post is ifs, buts and maybes. Hence why I hardly ever bother to address them.

I'm not following a narrative, i'll make my judgements on what actually happens. Nothing else.

Whilst I would agree that Cambridge often contributes a contrary stance which is based on conjecture it is nonetheless important to have the debate and get views from both side of the fence

Nope. The EU will make it mandatory for the transition period of course but after that it will be a free for all in the UK as business tries to retain profit margins but with higher resource and material costs.

I could've sworn that we'd undertaken to write all current EU law and legislation into our ongoing British statutes??

Trouble is when it's all conjecture and views, rather than facts or actualities, it's just as dull as as it was long before the referendum even occurred.

I'll admit he's not out and out barking like steeleye20 is though.

Further to 'steeleye out and out barking'

'Fear of meat scandal as data shows hygiene breaches at over half UK plants'

Almost two-thirds of audited meat plants in breach of safety rules in England, Wales and Northern Ireland..............

Goes back 10 years apparently.

Someone spell out this chlorinated chicken thing for me. Really not sure how'd we'd be forced to accept it, any more than we would under Europe's TTIP deal with the US.

Yes that's correct but that is only being done so that business can continue uninterrupted after the transition period is over with regards to standards. From that point forward, any law can be changed by UK parliament. That's the whole point of copying the EU laws over, they allow them to be changed once the UK fully leaves the EU. Any changes can't be made overnight the day after the UK leaves the EU.

A bit like software code, you take a copy to make changes in order to change the functionality. You don't start from a blank sheet of paper if there is a working set of code available.
