I used to see him coming the other way every day through King's when I was on my way to lectures. Didn't get to speak to him but we passed each other practically every day in term time. Part of my daily routine; if I saw him on King's Bridge, I was early; First Court, I was on time; anywhere in King's Parade, I was late. If I didn't see him at all, he had already made it to Caius, and in that case there was little point in turning up at all. Jesus, Chimney dep 0842 The lecturers I was going to hear were not in the same class when it came to public speaking. The linguistics professor sat on his desk, stared at the floor, recited the contents of his breakfast, and then told us that "tar", "tower" and "tyre" were all homophones. Few subjects are more pointless and boring than the analysis of Early New High German printers' dialects. And Heaven help you if the subject matter had anything to do with Dostoyevsky. Getting out of that place with a Lower Second felt like coming away from Old Trafford with a point. And nowadays I couldn't do that run in less than twice that time!

You think he would have been offended by being associated with Rosa Parks, Gina Miller and Eddie Izzard because all of them have/had significant political aspects to their lives but weren't politicians? I'd hazard a guess that he wouldn't have been offended in the slightest. With all of them, if you were to talk about their life, ignoring the "political" aspects would be ignorant and wrong and leave an incomplete picture.

Why didn't you have a bike like everyone else? Whenever he used to turn up to formal at Caius (which was reasonably often) there was always a ripple of excitement, even though he ended up being a fellow there for over 50 years.

Which moron is that? Benedict Cumberbatch? Or one of the other numerous people who mentioned his work in standing up for the NHS when remembering him yesterday? I'm not politicising his death. You just seem to be uncomfortable recalling things he said and did and people lamenting his loss to a cause that he was fighting right up until his death. The fact that that cause is political is simply that - a fact. Your blinkered view is the only blind narrative here.
