Goalkeepers

Jack Butland - Stoke City
Joe Hart - West Ham United (loan from Manchester City)
Jordan Pickford - Everton
Nick Pope - Burnley

Defenders

Ryan Bertrand - Southampton
Joe Gomez - Liverpool
Harry Maguire - Leicester City
Alfie Mawson - Swansea City
Danny Rose - Tottenham Hotspur
John Stones - Manchester City
James Tarkowski - Burnley
Kieran Trippier - Tottenham Hotspur
Kyle Walker - Manchester City

Midfielders

Dele Alli - Tottenham Hotspur
Lewis Cook - AFC Bournemouth
Eric Dier - Tottenham Hotspur
Jordan Henderson - Liverpool
Adam Lallana - Liverpool
Jesse Lingard - Manchester United
Jake Livermore - West Bromwich Albion
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - Liverpool
Raheem Sterling - Manchester City
Jack Wilshere - Arsenal
Ashley Young - Manchester United

Strikers

Marcus Rashford - Manchester United
Jamie Vardy - Leicester City
Danny Welbeck - Arsenal

Strange squad from Southgate. 4 keepers, Hart shouldn't be near the squad.

Can someone tell me how Henderson, Livermore, Lallana and Welbeck are there?

You have to remember it's a 27 man squad, whereas the WC will be 23, so no doubt we'll lose one of the keepers. The keeper spot is pretty wide open now, so maybe he just wants to have a look at them all.

Henderson is easily in our top 3-4 central midfielders; I don't particularly rate him, but we're so short of options, it's inevitable he will be in.

The others are all weaker picks, but I'm struggling to think of any viable alternatives - be interested to hear who you think should be in instead?

Overall, I think it's quite encouraging - shown he is prepared to look outside of the big teams; Mawson and Tarkowski have had good seasons, and Cook is an exciting prospect who's starting to settle in the top flight.

I guess that's the problem isn't it, we are so short on options. I agree there are a few encouraging additions but some of the squad is just same old and so average.

I guess that's sort of where England are now, we're just another average national side.

Was about to reply the same before I spotted that.

I can't answer your question though, no idea how any of them have been picked apart from maybe Welbeck with Kane being injured.

Optimistic as ever

I'm quietly optimistic about the next few years - the team should have an opportunity to develop without some of the pressure heaped on the 'golden generation', and in Ali, Rashford, Sterling and Kane I think we have four of the best youngsters we've produced in at least a decade.

If we can build a solid enough side behind those four in attack, I think we could be a handful.

either way we can write off the WC this summer - the Russians will make it a very uncomfortable experience for us on and off the pitch

Agreed. Lingard also has been exceptional this year and I could see him becoming a
big player for England.
I think the selections of Hart and Livermore are very questionable. Good to see Pope get a chance and I'd start him personally. If you're basing it on performances this season not past reputation he has easily been the outstanding English keeper in the Premier League.

Without Kane there's no goalscorer, just 3 pacy forwards, no number 10?

Jamie Vardy isn't a goalscorer?

Ali and Lingard are both number 10s (if we play a system that needs one), and you still have Sterling, Lallana, Ox and Wilshere all capable of playing there.

Can't understand why Shelvey isn't in there.
