It depends on why the dentist feels that you need to visit the hygienist. If it's just for a quick scale and polish then perhaps it is a waste of time and money but if you have any form of gum disease a more thorough cleaning with sonic wotsit plus scraper thingy will help keep the gum disease at bay and enable you to keep your own teeth for longer.

I see the hygienist twice a year it costs about £35. I take the attitude it is better to spend money on maintaining or improving our health than on damaging it. How many posters on here don't think twice about buying cigarettes, alcohol, takeaways or even drugs. Yet the minute you suggest they go to a gym, dentist, chiropractor etc. "I can't afford it, too expensive"

We need to change our mindset on what we spend our money on. As one poster mentioned back in the day our diets did not include sugar so tooth decay was not the problem it is today. Maybe the OP doesn't need a hygienist but that is a medical decision between them and their dentist. I go because it is a preventative treatment.

I used to know a guy who had 2 front teeth missing he looked pretty ugly and nasty. Actually was a nice guy who couldn't afford replacement teeth as it ran into the thousands. He regretted not looking after his teeth.

But to counter that us oldies didn't have the benefit of fluoride in the water to protect our teeth

It was basically to deal with a small bit of scale behind where my front teeth are crossed. Took her 2 minutes with the hook thingy to deal with and clear.

It's not that I object to spending money to look after my health and welfare, it's that I object to being ripped off to do so! Once upon a time, a clean and polish was part and parcel of a routine check up or the finish to any course of treatment, and as for 'the price being higher' if the dentist does it, I really do feel that in the region of £150 per hour is more than enough - especially when, as I said, the operative is lucky to get half of this for actually doing the work.

The NHS has a problem with the transparency of the latest nurse's uniforms, I've offered to look into it.

Last time I went to the dentist he said this won't hurt. I grabbed his crown jewels and said no it won't.

I don't trust dentists like I don't trust car mechanics. It's a business.

I've got pretty good teeth so always find the hygienist gig a bit of a waste of time and money.

Plus they're usually a bit sadistic!

Having visited the dentist, she wanted me to follow up with an appointment to see their hygienists and got quite indignant when I announced that I find them unnecessary, overpriced and a total cop-out by dentists.

Now I'm sure there's going to be someone on Hol whose wife, partner, sister etc is one, and who will spring to their defence on what a great job they do and their contribution to the healthcare system. Which may be true but............

a brief comparison of other qualified people who contribute to my life/wellbeing may show what I mean:

My Osteopath: a 4 year training degree course, followed by 5 years as an Associate in a practice before setting up on his own. On going training essential to retain his registration with his professional body. Cost - £38 for usually 40/45 mins of treatment

My local car mechanic: 5 year apprenticship, on going development for registration of MOT testing station and to keep up with new car models/technology.
Cost : £45 an hour labour charge for a multi-skilled technician

Dental Hygienist: 5 GCSE's, 2 A Levels and a 2 year training course. Cost £38 for a 20 minute appointment of which probably barely 15 is spent working on my teeth. Scaling, polish and sorry, but I don't need to be told how to brush my teeth at my age!

I also happen to know (having done accounts for several s/employed hygienists) that of that £38, she will be lucky to get half!

It's a total con by dentists to offload the boring, simple, routine work and make a profit at the same time for something that, in my lifetime, was always part and parcel of a dental check-up.

I have always hated the dentist visit due to the butchering clinic in coldharbour road in waddon when we were kids, the pain was unbearable, not worth going through for the crap goodybag they gave you after with a travelling toothbrush in ! My last visit to my dentist in park st croydon, he ummed and ahhhed checking my teeth, then said to the assistant, "put k5 down janet, might as well give it a fill"! He then said "see you in a few weeks", to me, i said, " do i need any work then?" Well, k5 is starting to decay so might as well fill it" said dentist ! That was over 25 years ago, i never went back and havent had any trouble with k5 or any of my pearly whites since, and saved myself bundles of cash and lots of pain!
