Nobody would have died without the concentration camp security fences and inept policing and management. To blame this on standing is to still blame the supporters - as the government always has. The reason for the security fences in those days, which impeded egress onto the pitch, was because of the hooliganism and pitch invasions. By supporters. Is this your way to push a point? And what point exactly? It is a fact that in today's game a significant minority of spectators stands up, in spaces that are not designed for that and that certainly do not necessarily make it safer. Are most of those mindless violent hooligans who need protecting from themselves? Or do you want to minimalise risk? Had it been all seat stadium then the match would have been all ticket so only the required number of tickets would have been sold ie 2000 seats only 2000 people, one per seat and no rush of fans into the Leppings Lane stand to cause a crush. Same as Selhurst Park today one ticket per seat and when all have been sold that's it, no more fans allowed in. It was an FA Cup semi-final, I'm pretty sure that it was all ticket and the correct number of tickets were sold. The problem was that too many people were crushed into one section of the terrace rather than being told to go to other parts of the terrace that weren't full.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

No of course they wouldn't because you sell the tickets with the seat numbers on them and when they are all sold that's it - stadium full.

I get you entirely. Obviously this could not be done with old fashioned terraces, amount of tickets sold was unlimited and people just squeezed in like the olden days. And certainly with a modern type of rail standing it would never be possible to allocate spaces rather then seats. Point made. Originally posted by PZ Eagle

The real problem was that the central pens were overcrowded when there was still plenty of space in the side ones. Not helped by crowd management for which "atrocious" would be a compliment. Originally posted by saveloy

Funny how you conveniently ignore the other major factors to the majority of deaths...i.e fans laying others on their backs and not in the recovery positions, the decision to let fans in that didnt have tickets. Every other English club 0. Plus Hillsborough didn't have an up to date safety certificate, and the people in charge were underqualified.

The system of safe rail standing at Celtic looks fine. You have your seat with a key by which you close the seat up and stand instead against secure railing, in a designated area, can't see any problems with it. Liverpool people understandably opposed now thinking it over after checking it out.
