Despite the combined might of the brains who regularly post here, who regularly have an answer for everything, not one response to the real reason we face the problems that we have for years now.

Good luck peeps.

What problems?

The answer to most problems is, too many people.

It's not the number of people its the rapid increase without the corresponding increase in housing and public services.

If Blair hadn't thrown the doors open we could have coped with a steady but controlled increase. What we need now is a period of stability to allow everything else to catch up. That doesn't mean no immigration but more targeted and controlled it also doesn't mean we put the brakes on forever.

One more point

There is a finite amount of population you can have on one small island. The trouble begins way before every yard of area is taken up by people. The rate of increase is a factor now but there will be no happy ending, just misery.

Too many people too little housing focus over decades. Property boom politics being yet another example of short term political gain set against long term interest for the country.

Also too many farmers with too much farming land perhaps?

It takes a lot of land to produce enough for a population. Obviously, we export produce but we have to import a lot more to sustain demand. I think we should be grateful for all the farmland because it slows the steady march of development. The obvious answer is population control. The alternatives will only equal disaster for future generations.

Who is earning from that exporting? Isn't the land worth more after a certain level of exports? This country has a hell of a lot of farmland.

I totally agree on population control but the population level ratio to housing went out of control decades ago. Short termism from both parties.

If politicians aren't going to control the population then we simply require more land and that means looking at land that could be put to better use.

The working class man and woman have been dumped on by the decisions makers and expected to like it.

It's obviously a short term solution but it is also a slippery slope. When the first square mile of farmland is surrendered to development, that will spell the beginning of the end for this green and pleasant land.

I also agree with the slippery slope argument. I've literally seen this in my lifetime. We have seen it with the EU, civil partnerships and hate speech laws.

However, the leaders have allowed rapid population growth and lied about its costs. All some point the land owners are going to have to pay the price for that.

That would be circa 1700 and the beginning of the rather unconservative industrial revolution.

You should see how much farmland is being built on here in Somerset already....... heavens knows where they are going to find jobs/schools/GP's as the local services are already groaning under the strain.......and these are not houses for 'local' people as they are too far out of their price range.

I buy property renovate it and sell it. I’ve never sold a property to a under 30 (be it couple or single person).
Property ownership is becoming a middle class thing. The working classes are going to be perennial renters. The welfare class will get social housing. The middle will own... the upper middle/higher classes will deal in property.
