If Blair hadn't thrown the doors open we could have coped with a steady but controlled increase. What we need now is a period of stability to allow everything else to catch up. That doesn't mean no immigration but more targeted and controlled it also doesn't mean we put the brakes on forever.

The trouble begins way before every yard of area is taken up by people. The rate of increase is a factor now but there will be no happy ending, just misery. Too many people too little housing focus over decades. Property boom politics being yet another example of short term political gain set against long term interest for the country. Also too many farmers with too much farming land perhaps? Edited by Stirlingsays (12 May 2018 1.07pm)

Obviously, we export produce but we have to import a lot more to sustain demand. I think we should be grateful for all the farmland because it slows the steady march of development. The obvious answer is population control. The alternatives will only equal disaster for future generations.

This country has a hell of a lot of farmland. I totally agree on population control but the population level ratio to housing went out of control decades ago. Short termism from both parties. If politicians aren't going to control the population then we simply require more land and that means looking at land that could be put to better use. We have seen it with the EU, civil partnerships and hate speech laws. However, the leaders have allowed rapid population growth and lied about its costs. All some point the land owners are going to have to pay the price for that.
