This year is special because he has a big proportion of the less important players for the future coming to the end of their contract. No criticism of their contribution to the club in the past - eg Ward, Cabaye but their careers are on the wane - so that is an opportunity for him to get them on lower wages as squad players or replace them with better players on lower salaries. That is Dougie's job if you are wondering what he is supposed to be doing. What will keep us in the Premier League until the new stand is built, after which we will have extra income to give us breathing space, is excellence in recruitment. That is not easy but our squad management has been non-existent since we reached the Premier League and that is what needs to improve. Happy that Parish is the guy to try and make it happen. Good post. I was thinking the same in bold this week. Parish must at some point use the opportunity to nail us as prem certainties for a couple of years, especially with the new man stand. But that’ll require successful scouting so those can never be 100%.

Am I alone in being somewhat uncomfortable with this thread? To take the club from the edge of oblivion to where we are now, with the prospect of a fantastic new stand and continuing our record run in the top flight....it's pinch yourself stuff. Everyone makes mistakes in business, especially one as unscientific and risk-laden as professional football. I do not feel comfortable debating those mistakes though and instead just want to shake the bloke's hand.

It’s been great, but 1 striker in the premier League, anyear after 1 left back or 6 defenders plus Fryers? Parish knows this isn’t the level required and it goes some way to managers leaving.

We don’t know why managers left. BFS saved his reputation over a short period then had a break for 6 months. Pulis was a money grabbing c*nt and he lost a legal battle to prove it. Sure FdB was an error, but it was a well intentioned one. Apart from recruitment this season Parish has hardly put a foot wrong. As for the striker situation, we have been pretty unlucky, but also not having someone there in front of Zaha is arguably the reason why this season has gone the way it has, and if we keep him I’m sure his new position will play a big part. I think judging recruitment after this window is a better barometer because we will have got rid of a lot of deadweight.

Allardyce was supposedly leaving to permanently retire, which wasn't the case, and which no doubt affected our pre-season, yet he doesn't get the same level of opprobrium. Perhaps he'd already got wind of the backing he was likely to get with respect to transfers? If another successful manager walks this summer some serious questions would need to be asked of the board.

However the other reality is that ALL teams in the EPL except: ManU, Liverpool, Arsenal & Spurs (plus Chelski & Man City, but only whilst they have their current owners) are there on borrowed time - apart from these 6, there's absolute NO thing as an established EPL club. Regardless of Parish achievements & uncomfortable at it is to acceptable , unfortunately our day will come.

Taken from the High Court judgement : It was common ground in the arbitration that under his contract of employment the Claimant was due to be paid a bonus of £2 million gross, if he successfully kept Crystal Palace in the Premier League after the 2013/2014 season, which he did, and if he remained in employment on 31 August 2014, which latter condition was in the event not fulfilled.
