Some awful pens in this shootout.

I'm very confident we will make the final after beating Colombia.

We will just have to be very very lucky against France/Brazil in the final.

'in the final'?

Have we got a free pass or something?

Might as well not bother with the other games then.

I just don't see any of the others on our side as a big threat. It's our best chance in years and we're going to take it.

You're kidding right? We play the toughest side left in our half of the draw next.

Amen!
The fact they earn s***loads has caused the players to feel they are "above it all", time for action.
And how easy it would be: only the Captain is allowed to speak to the referee. After a foul you have to immediately clear the ball and move to the 10 yards required. Yellow if not, or even better introduce "time off the pitch penalties".
Then another intriguing idea: allow a selfpass on free kicks. One of my colleagues mentioned it as he complained about the lack of flowing action in football and while in first instance I dismissed it I think it could work great. Fouling should not pay off and as is, it surely does.

Referees are challenged and intimidated far too much. The football authorities should really come down hard on it.

Depends if England players REALLY want success that much and are capable of stepping up to plate in games of such importance henceforth with. Whilst most of the favourites have now been sent home, the draw to the final has at least been generous to England however all other teams will be fancying their chances in the qualifiers. Can't help but feel that England need to press for victory during 90mins as penalty route seems to be bedevilling the stronger teams. Southgate absolutely right to keep team expectations measured- I hope that the training behind the scenes includes psychological input and not just physical & strategic.

The ref for Russia v Spain was definitely under instruction to not give Golovin a yellow card but the Spanish players were so annoying when any decision was made.

When Russia had the penalty one of their midfield dwarfs was walking back into the penalty box right at the last second to further delay the taking of it, after Ramos and Pique's laughable protestations.

In the shootout De Gea tried to approach the Russian players instead of just getting in place on the goal line, as his opposite number did. Ramos then tries to have a word and get in the way of Cheryshev.

Optimistic as ever

No tears shed here on Spain's demise. Boring as hell, cynical.....tiki taxi home for them. They would have taken Russia to the cleaners if they'd played Diego Costa and Rodrigo together and actually tried to get the ball forward with any sort of pace.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)

Yep. They scraped through their group in the first place using the same tactics.

They've got B teams in Spain but no plan B.

Yes, I said in my post before I think we'll make the final if when we beat Colombia. I don't fear anyone else on our side.

It's coming home!
