Yeah, I seem to remember Cantona’s punishment for assault in front of 25k people was having a few kickabouts with some kids.

He shouldn't have done what he did. However he was clearly provoked by other clubbers but that doesn't excuse his behaviour. The down side of being a footballer / celebrity is that their is always someone prepared to wind you up and make some money out of it. There is a story about Troy Deeney and his wife on a night out. A man tried to provoke him whilst his mate filmed it. Deeney ignored it and took his wife to another bar only to be followed by this git who again tried to provoke him. Eventually being unable to evade these p***ks Deeney and his wife went home. No punches were thrown and nothing worth filming and selling to the papers just a couple minding their own business and having their night ruined. I think some scumbags realise there is money and some sort of fame in this type of baiting. How much did the tabloids pay for the footage of Puncheon? Even when the public are not out to get someone they can still overstep the line. A friend was in a restaurant and noticed Damon Albarn was having a quiet meal with his wife and son. This fan walked up to him and gave him a big bear hug whilst he had a mouthful of food and gushed about how great he was. Albarn was very polite and thanked the guy. As my mate said the fan finished his meal then went and disturbed Albarn it never occurred to him to wait for Damon to finish his food first. I would hate to be a celebrity.

What a stand up guy Deeney is. How long did he serve in prison for kicking someone in the head? Yes JP was in the wrong for but as others have pointed out, we don't know why he acted that way.

Just to say that I have been fortunate enough to be in the company of certain such people in your 'Neck of the woods' (Beckenham) and never have they experienced any antipathy with reprobates approaching them to goad and insult in order to try and provoke a reaction - in fact quite the opposite ! I mention this not in any egotistical fashion as I am certainly not a pompous nabob with vainglorious tendencies but just to highlight the fact that those in the 'Public eye' can actually enjoy themselves in public free of any confrontation and anti-social behaviour. I wasn't defending Deeney's past behaviour I guess that was why he was targetted. He was the example I know of I guess footballers and celebrities put up with this all the time. As for JP most of the tabloids have accounts as to what happened, how true they are I have no idea. However I do think it reasonable to assume that some form of provocation was involved but he should have left it to the bouncers to sort out.

Put an R ‘n’ B club in Beckenham or anywhere and you’re going to get Bravado bullsh1t and fights over treading on someone’s foot. I remember hearing that R ‘n’ B clubs in Croydon needed a special licence.

I avoid Beckenham on a Friday and Saturday night it is awful especially around the Beckenham Junction area. Narrow paths, too many pubs and clubs close together, people spilling out into the streets the inevitable happens. Probably no different from any other high street on the weekend. There is a huge difference between a night out in Beckenham midweek and one at the weekend. I would like to think you are right that celebs can enjoy themselves if they avoid certain places. I am not sure that is true any more everyone has cameras these days. I heard a story that when Daglish managed Blackburn he insisted the players all went to a local private golf club. That way they could relax and control the situation.
