It's not the woman being posh (necessarily), it's that she wants the experience of being pampered and in good company.
She wants to dress up and mingle with other like-minded people. Enjoy some wine and perchance some posh grub (fine dining)

On the plus side, you can sit next to your partner and not have to talk for 3 hours (minus 30 mins interval)

You are not likely to get any direct bonus points, but once she tells her mates she has been to the ballaaay,....you'll be quids-in

male ballet dancers in spray-on tights used to make me feel quite insecure until someone kindly told me they all wore cod pieces

This, good shout.

We spent the without-the-kids holiday budget on a few days in St Petersburg a few weeks ago and took in the Kirov Ballet whilst there.

I don't mind going out suited and booted but admit that I wasn't exactly hyped about the ballet. I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would...it was a proper spectacle of skill and theatre. And it didn't need subtitles.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)
