This is just a natural progression of the direction academia is taking. Even when I finished my degree, I swear people were competing to see who could be the most stressed at exam time. People used to faint over exams. In my view pathetic - if you faint over an exam there is no way you can face any real world problems.
The other side of this is the direction of research that is being undertaken. I was a researcher, in Ireland, the UK and Europe. Increasingly, it became more difficult to carry out any research unless it followed whatever the trendy movement of the time was. Near the end of my time this became Feminism and meant every project was gender studies, the glass ceiling, women's rights. That's fine, however, every bit of funded research had an element of this - otherwise there was no funding.
This excluded any real or actual physical research in important fields, unless the same tired conclusions were reached. Women have been excluded, women have less rights etc.
There is nothing wrong with equality, however, excluding everything else and only funding the fashionable has meant academia is now basically a joke. There is no interest in finding the truth, merely having a perception of 'righting all the wrongs' through academic work. This means much real, useful study is ignored. Any criticism of this and you will not get a job again.
So Oxford deserves all the snowflakes, they will be around forever now. Academia is essentially morally and mentally meaningless as everyone is simply pressured into following the trends. Dissenting voices will, as usual, be labelled dissident, far right, loonies or at the least, eccentric.

Obviously I agree with most of your post.

I beg to differ on their being nothing wrong with equality.

Outside of certain legal circumstances it's been nothing but a hatchet tool used against meritocracy.

True....though there will never really be either.

Both are slogans.

Access to the top universities should be based upon nothing but innate IQ score.

They should then be indoctrinated in nationalism with a small 'n'. As the whole point of these universities is to produce the best minds to improve the fortunes of the country first and humanity second.

Yes, totally agree, on a different note did you see the gov u turn on the summer school meals? Just goes to show that the media control the gov decisions, a footballer comes up with an idea, all be it a worthy one, gov say they not interested, then the minute scotland say they are going with it we say we are to, do the gov have any actual ideas of their own or are they just watching sky news to make a decision?

Basically social media rules the world. Get something trending on that and the media run with it. Then the government will flip flop and follow any amount of pointless campaigns. How it got this bad, who knows? I'm guessing the future value of tech companies comes into it somewhere.

Yeah, it"s madness, i"m looking for a long shot to be pm one day, and although he"s out of the news lately, i think one David Beckham could get the popular vote, probably after an airing of "at home with the Beckhams" on tv, or David doing a week working in the nhs, nice little series, then standing for pm, maybe after a stint at London mayor, anything is possible now!

I'm totally against quotas or positive discrimination and am, in fact, a huge advocate for meritocracy. However, I think you would agree, for example, that a man or woman should get the same pay for the same job? Or that a black, Asian, White or a person with a disability should be able to get a job and earn equally?
I know it's a bit Utopian and never really works that way: I'm not in an ivory tower.
Nevertheless, surely this is a basic value that Britain strives for, and largely does quite well at: despite the current ludicrous media coverage.

Valid comment.

I liked Rashford's comment....though I haven't thought it through it seems civilised. Still, surely that idea is hardly new.

Still, the sudden change in governmental policy does kind of make you think if anyone in there really knows what they are doing.

Wouldn't the education secretary know why they didn't have that policy in the first place?
