Sometimes smaller numbers worked in your favour as if you ran you would have to take the flack in the pub saturday night, as all know each other, but if you are a massive team like utd nobody would see you again , unless you were a cockney red where they all meet up every game

The pre CCTV days as time went on things got smaller but more violent more of a cult thing you had too make the effort you couldn't be swept along in the moment but more intent involved which made it more dangerous but more equal everybody new what to expect
