I feel Europe is over-represented right now. Thirteen plus the host country is three too many. This is the World Cup, not the European Invitational. Oceania is not represented at all and deserves one place. Africa and Asia deserve better representation as well. CONMEBOL could get another place as long as they take the three Guyanese (Guyana, Surinam and whatever they call the French one) into their confederation. Ten out of 32 qualifiers is plenty for Europe.

I think that is the nub of the issue. Is the world cup a competition of the best teams in the world in which case Europe is under represented. Or should the WC have representatives from all corners of the earth.

My view is improve the quality of the lesser teams as this will strengthen the WC not dilute it.

So if three CONCACAF nations have been given auto-qualification, how many other places will be given to the North and Central Americas? Canada would never qualify and even the US couldn't make it this time around, falling below Panama so why should they get three auto-qualified spots when they are clearly not good enough?

Also seems so dumb with the US hosting it so recently to have it again, especially as WC's only come every 4 years.

48 teams, wonder if Scotland still fail to qualify.

According to Infantino, in the 48 team scenario CONCACAF will have 6 countries qualifying with another two potential spots through play offs. It is possible under this that the three hosts will participate in the qualifiers and if one doesn't qualify it will go into the play offs. Since Mexico is virtually certain to qualify outright and the USA would also make it, that leaves Canada to be in a play off. As it stands under the present 32 country system, the final qualifying round consists of 6 countries, with the top 3 qualifying and a fourth going into the play offs, so in the 48 team system those six (Mexico, USA, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago) would have all qualified.

In that case, why not sack off qualifying and run the whole thing like the Champions League? Everyone in at the start (with byes to the "top 48" nations) a few rounds of eliminators and then on to the group stage > knockout.

Not really looking that way if you see the breakdown of the last 16.

10 of 14 European teams are through.
4 of 5 South American teams
1 of 3 Concacaf teams
1 of 5 Asian teams
0 of 5 African teams

I continue to maintain that this is the World Cup and not the European Invitational. We need more representation from outside to Europe to grow the game. Europe certainly can do with three less slots, which still would give them eleven in this World Cup. UEFA is over represented and that is holding the game back in other parts of the world. Why is this so? One reason, money.

And almost everyone would like it to have the most talented teams in it. Therefore the number of places given to European and South American sides will increase when it is expanded, rather than be reduced.

You can't say UEFA is over represented when such a high ratio of their teams progress from the groups.

North American and all of Asia are not being held back by a lack of money, only Africa could use that argument. And like everything else in Africa, giving them money doesn't solve anything.

And I still maintain that Europe has way to much influence and it must be curbed for the good of the game. Exposure is the key, not money. Teams get better as they get more exposure, both at the club and international level. The big European clubs try to squeeze out the others through demanding the lion share of TV rights revenue. The big countries demand more slots so they don't a rough time qualifying. I'm not necessarily advocating for CONCACAF, which gets what it deserves. That there is no country from Oceania makes this less than a representative World Cup and condemns that region to second class football so that one more European team gets in. Why i it that only UEFA doesn't have a "half" place that goes to the winner of an inter-confederation play off. I consider your argument elitist and counter-intuitive to growing the game throughout the world.

I disagree that Europe has way too much influence, and doubly disagree that it must be curbed for the good of the game.

Doing what you would like would be detrimental to the game in my opinion, by lowering the quality of it's top competition.

The highest ranked CONCACAF, Asian or African team are all behind European teams who missed out on qualifying altogether. The same for Oceania, which Australia were (and are) head and shoulders above the next best side from the region.

I disagree about exposure or Iceland would never have got where they are, nor Wales, Croatia or other numerous small countries with little football history or any history in the case of some newer countries.

If you play second class football, you deserve a second class competition, not a seat at the top table by virtue of how isolated your region of the world is. By that logic the scientists in the antarctic could assemble a team and demand a place.

The game doesn't need growing, almost everyone plays it, almost everyone loves it. Where's it got to grow?

Just get better at playing it if you want to argue for more representatives.

Case in point would be the confederations cup, which is a pile of crap. It has 50% of it's places allocated to the sort of teams you'd want more of

At the last one the 2 European sides, 1 South American side and Mexico are the 4 that got out of the groups. The African, Asian and Oceania sides all went home without a win.

The final was Europe v South America.

You have to got back to 2001 to find an Oceania representative to even win a game, even including Australia with that since they've moved to Asia and therefore given the region 2 spots in it occasionally.

The Confederations Cup is gone and will be replaced by a club cup competition to shake down the World Cup sites.
