For me personally, looking at the evidence available and I know we can draw different conclusions from it, but this universe began to exist (Big Bang), it didn’t have to exist. We have to ask what caused this event, the universe can’t explain itself as it was not created yet so something outside the universe caused it to be born because in our scientific experience, if something begins to exist it must have a cause. Take this into account with the extreme improbability of a life permitting universe (so precise scientists don’t say it happened by chance but there is an infinite amount of universes instead and we are just lucky to be a life permitting universe, this is an idea, there is not one shred of evidence for it).

Was Jesus a real person? Was he crucified? Did his followers believe they saw him resurrected? Was the tomb empty? All serious scholars will answer yes to the above whether they are Christian or atheist. What best explains these facts??

That Jesus was a real person who was crucified, whose tomb was found empty and his disciples believed they saw appearances of him after his death.

So what?
There were quite a few Messiahs knocking around in those days. Jesus had the advantage of eventually being adopted by Rome and being mixed up with various other mythical characters.

Actually, the whole resurrection thing was a later invention.
Have you researched the writing of the New Testament?
It was written a long time after the supposed events.
The fact is that scholars know bugger all about Jesus.

Yes I have done my research. Like I said, people draw different conclusions from the same evidence. The gospels were written 40-70 years after the events. What’s your views on the origins of the universe?

In keeping with everyone else on Earth, I don't know why the Universe exists. Scientists have reasonable ideas about it's beginning and they know more about physics than I.
If you are about to offer some 'spaghetti monster' explanation as to why it might have been God's work than don't, unless you want to be bombarded by Dawkinsian logic.

It's really way past time that intelligent people stopped using God to fill in the gaps of human knowledge.

I assume/hope that the OP is discussing this as you would characters in a novel. There is obviously no God or Devil in the Biblical sense.
Both characters have evolved over many generations and became fixed, I suppose, at the point that the masses had access to books.
Since both are figments of imagination, they both represent aspects of human the psyche.

Just a heads up....you're presenting things as facts that are actually simply opinions or beliefs.

I could quite easily turn around and say the same. That I categorically know God exists. And I'd say that I do. But technically, it's still my belief system...not a fact.

It's not 'obvious' at all.

It's not the same because he isn't presenting evidence for anything else. He's simply saying that the biblical stories are untrue.

He's not presenting something else in its place.

Most things can be spoken in terms of belief or opinion. I can have belief or be of the opinion that the car will start in the morning. What matters is how reliable is that belief. Is it based upon reliable and repeatable events.

Sure, you can categorically believe in your religion but believing in 'God or Devil in the Biblical sense' has as much evidence and validity as believing in Thor or Zeus has.
