Of course, Sporty was too modest to point out that the word ‘Astronaut’ is a compound word with Latin and Greek roots. ‘Astro’ - as in Astronomy, Astrology; and ‘Naut’ - as in Nautical. The word basically means ‘Star-sailor’. I don’t make this as an academic point, but one that’s a reminder of the spelling,

Space travel has historically been thought of as akin to seafaring. Well before any were actually invented, space vehicles were called ‘SpaceSHIP’ or SpaceCRAFT’.

TBF that happened in aviation too. True an "aircraft" is quite different from the long-defunct "airship" idea, but we still have terms like navigation, aircraft, knots and nautical miles rather than statute miles and miles per hour (let alone kilometres), port and starboard.

My thoughts that it's more like a time traveller. Espicially if you think about Christianity. Jesus is said to rise again or is it just that he will be born and then travel back in time with future technology to perform the so called miracles.

If you are not a Christian, it's quite easy to suppose that Jesus was a "composite character", like the wizard Merlin as related by Geoffrey of Monmouth in the thirteenth century. That is to say, there were stories of various "miracles" or actions performed by similar people, but they were not all the same person and may have taken place over many decades or (as in the case of Merlin) centuries. In that case of course it's perfectly possible that one of the personages referred to is known to be dead, and then further stories arise from other personages that are swept into the same composite character. In that case it might appear that the character "returned from the dead".

Now I personally don't believe that about Jesus because I believe that He showed the stigmata to Thomas when He rose again and appeared to him, and invited him to place his hands in them. But that is a matter of faith, of course.

Indeed, although the word ‘spaceship’ was certainly in use in the mid/late 19th century; before the aeroplane was a twinkle in the eye, but I suppose around the same time as the airship (ie a navigable balloon) was being invented.

I don"t think there have been many stupider ideas than the airship. I mean floating around in the sky attached to a million gallons of hydrogen? FFS.
