We have long moved away from the conflicts which shaped our past and prefer to distance ourselves from some of our chequered history especially since the effects are still felt today

Indeed, look at India - those damn spare wives still won't go back to immolating themselves on their husbands' funeral pyres, and the rest of them are still getting about on OUR railway, to get to the plantations that we built for them, that grow the tea we knicked from China for them......

We really were a s*** conquering nation.......

And how much thanks did we get from the bloody Germans for inventing concentration camps? Bloody none, that's how much.

No you have brought into that crap.

I reject it and that one sided reading of history will be fully kept away from my sons.

I will teach them that Imperialism needs to be seen within the context of its time and within the context of human nature.

Turkey doesn't care how you think about it. Besides it isn't the only example of countries that don't suffer this Marxist view of history......which is almost amusing considering the hell that Marxism enabled in the world.

"objectivism" is a trait of a good history teacher, in a world where most history books are subjective.
"Context within its time" spot on

Polls have shown that most people believe the British Empire is something to be proud of and that countries are better off since.

It depends what you mean by better off I suppose - do you have a link for the poll you mention, out of interest?

No reason to doubt you, but just seems surprising.

If you look at the economic performance of countries in Africa, they generally line up with how colonized they were.

The ones that had the least amount of colonization are the poorest.

Do you actually understand that Britain was one of many countries who had ambitions to exploit the undeveloped world? Do you not grasp the fact that it could just as easily been us being exploited in the same way that the Romans did years earlier?
It is not a British thing. It is a consequence of having superior technology.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense. Undoubtedly the exposure to better technology, better understanding of economics etc meant they fast-tracked in a lot of ways, but it's difficult to weigh that up against the violence, oppression and loss of culture - that's what I meant by "it depends what you mean by better off".

Overall, I very much agree with you that it has to be seen within the context of it's time.
