It's difficult to have this debate without straying into '' be careful what you wish for '' territory.

After 6 seasons in the PL, my perception of the scouting and transfer approach at Palace is that nothing much has changed / improved.

I agree with others on here in that our ambition first and foremost is to stay in this league. But to do that requires continuous improvement because every other club is doing that.

At the moment I would say the most pressing issues are replacing Cabaye and settling the Zaha situation - if indeed there is one to settle.

As for going up to the next level, well that may be made possible once the new stand has been built and paid for, but not before then in my opinion.

Stop Press: Parrish is not perfect. A hero but not superhuman. I'm a fan of his but I am now genuinely concerned at the lack of sensible transfer activity and the inability to get rid of over paid deadwood (like Mutch) and replace it with sensible buys - we spent big in Jan 17, we bought Benteke with the Bolasie money, but the last two windows have been poor, apart from RLC. I see Fulham, Wolves, Southampton all involved in squad improvements, Newcastle to a lesser degree, West Ham look very ambitious, but a worrying lack of activity from us - we've got a stand too build and the wage bill is hard to control in the prem - we don't want the bubble to burst with marquee signings, we want one or two reasonably ambitious targets and some budget buys who can develop, we got out of jail last season and I was expecting a more strategic approach this season, I've seen no evidence of that yet - we need additions in key areas or it's the bottom five till April again.

Good observations. I will add to your comments.

Roy has already come out and stated that we need to improve our squad otherwise we wil be flirting with relegation again.

By buying better quality players shows intent to the likes of Wilf, and others that we are trying to improve. Otherwise our better players will go.

Hazard has just made a statement saying he wants to see Chelski buy quality otherwise he will consider his future. So it's not always about money, its about squad improvement.

It was apparent to all last year when we had injuries that our squad does not have strength in depth, some were just not up to the task.

My understanding is that the money has been provided by the yanks for the ground improvements, so we should have a budget for purchases.

The other excuse which people keep talking about is FFP. What a mystery that is. How we keep saying we are near it,is a load of tosh.

Example.
Last season in the 2 transfer windows Everton spent in excess of £175 million. I dont believe that there were any players that went out the other way.

So where does FFP fit in there.

Every club should have ambition otherwise whats the point.
every club should strive to improve, and at the moment it appears that every club in the Prem is striving to improve their squad, with the exception of Palace.

I do hope that I am wrong but going on previous years, we will be last minute .com and looking for bargin basement signings that will not improve the squad, which send a message out to our better players that we are not ambitious.

4 weeks to go.

Cabaye and RLC are the only first-team regulars from last season who have left. Wan Bissaka adequately fills the boots left by the Man Utd lad, so that's not an issue. Our new GK is the player we probably needed a year ago.

If Sako signs a new contract then with Wickham, Puncheon and Dann all back the only vital replacements we need are two new midfielders, and even then it depends on Roy's view of Riedewald and (to a lesser extent) Kirby and Williams' ability to fill the vacant roles. If Sako doesn't sign then getting Antonio seems like a good bit of business, with bookies now offering evens on that deal (from what I read yesterday).

If Roy continues with his tactic of inverted wingers then I think signing two first-team ready midfielders would be enough for us to compete strongly, unless we had another catastrophic season of injuries. I think Parish may well be looking at the accounts and viewing it the same way, although I would be annoyed as anyone if we had a third pre-season of failing to address the obvious areas.

For me, the key this pre-season was stability and hopefully for the first time in years we might finally have that. One less popular view (I would imagine) that I have is that Bentenke will be a beast this season if he stays. Reading his interview and the fact he came back early from his holidays to prepare suggests we may have a different player on our books next season.

Very balanced comments with reality.
Unfortunately, you will now be abused as a panicking ' pant wetter'by many on here who simply have a tendency to ignore the reality of the situation as it is.

The reality is we are entering our sixth season in the Premiership, unprecedented territory for us. If you seriously think the people running the club haven’t a clue what they are doing, then you are misguided. Of course things could of been done differently, but we are where we are, please don’t think it’s luck, you can’t be lucky 5 seasons in a row in the toughest league in the world..
The ambition is obvious, to stay in the league and improve the infrastructure.

Delaney went, although a fringe player.

Puncheon!!! Really!! His form was on a permanent dip over 18 months ago.

Dann was out for months, and Wickham over a year.

It would be good to have both players fully fit but it will take them time to get match fit.

We need at least 3/4 players in the door, it's as simple as that.

If as you say the ambition is to stay in this league then we will not keep the likes of Zaha and not attract the types of players that the team need to kick on.

Simply to 'stay in this league' is not an ambition, top 10 is and if this is the case Steve stop shopping at Aldi at 21:55 hours and demonstrate that you mean business.

I also agree; it's just stating the bleedin' obvious.

Goldberg and Jordan had ambition, but didn’t know how to achieve it, ending up in administration. Your statement about shopping at Aldi needs explanation, as 10 teams in the league have as their most expensive signing below the fee paid for 2 of our players, so where are they shopping.
The ambition is still to stay in the league and become established. The finances aren’t there to buy marquee signings every transfer window.

More like they never had a special player capable of making Barcelona’s bench that’s more or less give us time to allow further investment to make us an established prem side

I will get agitated in a few weeks but Southampton and West Ham were thrifty last season so are expecting to let rip on transfers a bit more. Fulham and Wolves obvious have to get spending. We need to do some balancing and I think it’s safe to assume we’re waiting for Chelsea and/or RLC to fly home to start fitting the jigsaw together, unfortunate that may be. Leaving the rest till last day won’t be good enough and very risky.
