I don't know about that. Him and Cabaye are totally different players. Kouyate is more like Milivojevic. Would you have the team play with 2 defensive midfielders with no build up play abilities? I am shaken just thinking about the type of football that would be...

I know what you’re referring to but I didn’t see Cabaye supplying many through balls or assists or even THE PASS that led to the assist in the last couple of years. Don’t get me wrong, it’s going to be a test replacing someone who covers a lot of ground, breaks up play and takes the ball off our defenders and STARTS the slow attacks going but let’s not fool ourselves he was Messi or Iniesta because he hasn’t been. For years we haven’t had a creative midfielder and that was with Cabaye.

The following is such a good post by bigend1 on the Kouyate thread on the BBS I’ve copied and pasted it but not posted it in italics:

‘I think we need a box to box. Effective defensively but can pick a pass and keep possession. Like Cabaye funnily enough. He really was fantastic for us and just what we need except he couldn’t hold back time.

With Luka, a player like Cabaye is perfect as we’ve a strong defensive set up but can break quickly as they can both pass. If we go too far the other way... Ruben is a good example, he offered no defensive side at the moment then we get overrun and lose the midfield. (Big fan of Ruben btw, I fully expect him to be incredible, he’s got things to improve though)

In simple terms, although it’s not really we play 442. We face mainly 352 or variants of at the moment.. those two Center mids need to be solid enough or we lose control of the game. Our creativity comes from the two up front, the wide midfilders coming mostly inside going forward and the full backs supporting. The two midfilders luka +1 primarily protect the defence, sit deeper and offer an option and need passing ability to launch counter attacks which with benteke, zaha, Townsend, Pva etc are still going to be our most effective weapon against many of the sides we face.

Sometime we could have Luka deep on his own and have another attacking player but we’ll want two most games... and of course cover for Luka

Ridewald has shown promise but I think it would be a mistake to go into this season relying on him to be good enough. He may or may not be.’

I think it would work having 2 defensive midfielders, either a Gonalons or Kouyate type player alongside Milo, the most successful team in our history used Andy Grey with Geoff Thomas providing the muscle with Salako and McGoldrick using their flare down the wings, we have Zaha and Townsend plus PVA and Wan Basaka. We don't have Wright and Bright but Benteke and I would really like to get Grealish playing behind Benteke or a Christian Erikson, hopefully the Doog has found a playmaker to fit that role

The poster is completely bang on.. but we’re quite clearly going for a holding midfielder. Since January we’ve been strongly linked with Amadou, Dendoncker and now Gonalons.

The Cabaye link will undoubtedly be a big miss if we don’t pull our finger out soon and start identifying more creative, box to box midfielders.

We're the Arthur over ere!

could West Ham possibly be linking in Kouyate with Antonio? it's gone quiet on the Antonio front, they seem to be bent on offloading the pair of them, they need them off the payroll with all their new players, so they're using our wanting Antonio to help get rid of Kouyate too?

Possibly

I reckon we're holding out for Loftus or drinkwater on loan possibly first. To keep costs down. I think one of those two and this new Turkish midfielder from galatasary perhaps for under 7 Mil will fill midfield and allow us to afford ings

Maybe, but even if we can afford Ings, £20 million!!

I mean, I can afford to pay £10 for a bag of Haribos, but that doesn’t mean that I would, or should pay that - and I am about as partial to a pack of Haribos as Palace are to ex Liverpool players.
