Hmm refusal to accept the referendum result, refusal to accept that Corbyn lost, refusal to accept that a program is not popular, I think I'm detecting a pattern...

Victoria Derbyshire Show Cancelled

[Link]

Yesterday there was the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth by the luvvies amid all sorts of accusations and conspiracy theories (cancelled to pay for the equality payouts etc.)

The BBC put a spin on why (Online viewing was good) but the real reason was rather obvious nobody was watching it. For once I applaud the BBC, making popular programs is tricky but unlike commercial telly the BBC is very reluctant to cancel shows it has put a lot of investment into (see Doctor Who).

Well for once common-sense has prevailed, I have never watched it so can't comment on it's quality but apparently it was an expensive show with low ratings.

Welcome to the real world BBC I hope this is the start of a more realistic approach to television viewing. If it aint being watched can it.

What's your answer?

Only make shows that lots of people want to watch?

Like sport, game shows and reality TV?

If nobody at all watches then cancelling is a no brainer but if it is providing important information then the trick has to be to get more people to watch it.

Surely here, of all places, the argument that the only one that matters is the commercial one, isn't going to be made. Is it?

There isn’t a shortage of current affairs programmes. One gets cancelled; another one starts.
Maybe she’s been a victim of the gender pay argument. The BBC have to make some savings to pay everyone the same.

I disagree with shelving it as all they need to do is to find someone to produce it that actually knows what the customers want and produce it accordingly

They have turned it from a family show, albeit slightly obsessed with gay people, to a show populated mostly by minorities with very flimsy social and environmental messages. If you are not from a minority then you have to speak with a strong local accent.
They even made The Master an Asian.

Great for PC but no one will watch it.

Oh, and it's crap.

It is for the reasons that you stated and also because it seems that no-one can write a decent storyline any more.

It's full of meaningless technobabble and the sonic screwdriver which started out as the name suggests is now the Dr Who equivalent of Harry Potter's wand as it can do anything and everything - especially when the scriptwriters have run out of ideas

The next Dr Who needs to be an Nigerian.

Then they can call him/her Dr Who Dat.

The reboot of Dr Who has always been a bit simple minded and throw away, even given that it is aimed mainly at kids, but they tried to make up for it by throwing in the odd profound moment. Essentially it has always been twaddle. At least in the Pertwee era, they tried to give it the appearance of being 'scientific'.

The latest incarnation is so dumbed down that it is genuinely painful to watch. The last one I had to fast forward.
It amazes me that it is popular in the US because they have been making vastly superior Sci Fi for the masses for years.

The luvvies are still in meltdown over the cancellation of Victoria Derbyshire show.

[Link]

The gist of their complaints seem to be that you can't cancel a show that is led by an award winning journalist and is staff mainly by women. After blaming the BBC naturally the Tories come in for some stick as really it's all their fault.

I simply do not get why the BBC and their staff have gone into meltdown over this. The show had poor rating and equivalent shows on other channels are pulling 4/5 times their numbers.

This is the not death of current affairs at the beeb they have plenty of other shows on TV, a 24 hour current affairs channel, radio and the web. The reason this show was cancelled was simple it was very expensive to make and no one was watching it.

That doesn't mean that a current affairs show cannot work or that Victoria Derbyshire cannot host a successful TV just that this format in this time slot over 5 years has not worked.

The makers of the show have had 5 years to get it right and they haven't, on commercial TV they would have cancelled it after one season or even sooner.

Cancelling this show is not an attack on the BBC or even women at the BBC it is what it is. These people need to grow up telly is a ruthless business and even at the taxpayer funded BBC you have to justify costs versus viewer numbers.

The BBC staff still seem to think that they decicde what is good for the public to watch whether the public knows it or not. Hopefully this is a wake up call the public through streaming and online decide what they want to watch and when.
