Apparently he wanted 4 million per year at Schalke, which they refused to pay. That's 77k per week.

Meyer has been cast by Schalke as this prima donna, but that may just be because they couldn't agree terms and wanted their fans to think it was his fault. In fact, I wonder if Schalke have spread rumours of 170k per week being offered to help backup their story. Given FFP and the supposed need to trim the wage bill I don't find it plausible that we would then offer Meyer 50k more than our star man. This is the German Messi, not the actual Messi!

Like with any player joining Palace I like to judge them on what they do on the pitch for us. The rest is just tabloid filler. Personally speaking, this deal has me very excited.

As much as I hope it’s not true, I get the feeling it probably is. How else would we land such a young talent above all those champions league teams on a “free” who were by all accounts put off by his wage demands. it’s starting to all add up now, although I still believe it’s good business there are several risks.
1. Players such as Zaha feel under valued and become disillusioned.
2. If Meyer does not produce, we will never sell him to another club while on such a ridiculous wage.
3. We have a smaller squad to compensate such high wages.
4. Overall unity in the club with a player who thinks he’s a cut above the rest.

All good points Ecopalace. On the other hand the fact that a player as good as Meyer is signing could be a positive incentive for Zaha to stay?

Something to consider is we do not know the details of the 170k per week wage. It could be very dependent on conditions and bonuses. Could be as little as 100k with say 70k made up of goal, assist, playing bonuses

Now this would make the most sense given the lack of return by Benteke edit: for example) over the last season and how we can’t risk further big wages on poor results.

So I manage a Workshop which provides a safe learning environment for blokes struggling with PTSD and other mental health issues. Being a Palace fan isn't listed yet.

Personally I think he’s gonna be on the £130k area that benteke is and zaha was offered. Think that’s why zaha was offered it to steady the ship but wilf ain’t a money grabber and probably didn’t want some silly buy out clause

Good point Peter, I think think your point is very valid.

This kind of structured deal seems to be the norm these days & half the reason deals take longer than they ever used to. As stated elsewhere earlier, Kane’s £200k a week deal is dependent on both him & Spurs hitting the same level as last season - apparently his basic pay still sits within their existing wage structure.

To put it all in perspective, Drinkwater was signed for around £28m on a 5 year deal @ £120k a week - that’s nearly £60m assuming Chelski don’t have to pay the £7m in add ons!

Which is what he was asking Schalke for and that makes sense. That supposedly is around what Cabaye was on too.

All we’ve done is pay him a higher signing on fee. He would’ve been snapped up if he was asking 80k

We def given him quite a few mill up front

2:22 him playing against palace at selhurst isn’t it?

An upgrade on Mutch, Puncheon and Lee. And RLC for that matter.

This ‘International Clearance’ malarkey. I don’t recall it cropping up when we bought Luka. He signed and then he played. What gives?

Not so. I remember 2 weeks of house hunting or getting his family over while we were badly struggling.

A big signing on fee is preferable I would say. Essentially you can justify that to the other players as the equivalent of a transfer fee, only the player and agent get it. Also, would it not help with FFP, as it would not be included in the wages as per percentage of income?
