All we’ve done is pay him a higher signing on fee. He would’ve been snapped up if he was asking 80k

We def given him quite a few mill up front

Yeah that’s what I think. But the other £90k is

£90k x 52 x 4 years = £18.7 mil.

I doubt we’ve given him that much. Maybe there’s no release clause or a relatively low one so he can move to the top 6 pretty soon.

As much as I hope it’s not true, I get the feeling it probably is. How else would we land such a young talent above all those champions league teams on a “free” who were by all accounts put off by his wage demands. it’s starting to all add up now, although I still believe it’s good business there are several risks.
1. Players such as Zaha feel under valued and become disillusioned.
2. If Meyer does not produce, we will never sell him to another club while on such a ridiculous wage.
3. We have a smaller squad to compensate such high wages.
4. Overall unity in the club with a player who thinks he’s a cut above the rest.

For a start, we actually have no idea what wages the club are offering Meyer. Zaha has reportedly been offered a more favourable contract that he has yet to sign, but he's already one of the, if not the, top earners at the club so I can't see he'd have any grounds for complaint. Let's not make any judgments about Meyer's future performance before he's even got here shall we?

As for this financial difficulties nonsense, that BSer from Brighton seems to have put the bloody wind up everyone. Steve Parish may have his faults, but financial dork he ain't, so can we forget some Seagull's opinion about our impending third administration, because our three owners could buy and sell The Lizard 10 times over.

This lad has earned himself a reputation as a money-grabber, holding his club to ransom after deliberately running down his contract.

His club suspended him for the final two games of their season after he complained of "bullying" by Schalke.

I think it is reasonable to assume we are paying mental money to secure Max's services, considering clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal have been scared off by his demands.

This is what he had to say about his old Sporting Director : "I just didn't want to be at Schalke anymore and work under Mr. Heidel. That's why [I didn't extend my contract]. Lately it just feels like bullying to me."

Or Arsenal and Liverpool were never interested and it’s papertalk. Perhaps he was being bullied? Or perhaps we are paying a fortune for him and he’s a troublemaker. Reality is we don’t know and probably won’t ever know but to me it seems an excellent signing and if a top journalist that undoubtably knows more than all of us combined reckons its around 80k a week, that’s as close the the truth we’ll ever get. Young German international at 80k a week sounds like good business to me.

Seems to me on one hand we lament SP for not splashing cash at the moment and then when he does, in this case wages rather than fee we are questioning him. It's pretty clear SP is a tough negotiator and tries to be shrewd with money so i'm inclined to beliee he has Meyer on a deal that he thinks is feasible and sustainable for the club.

He'll still cost us less than Benteke/year. Benteke is probably on 4-4.5/year plus paying the 'mortgage' on him.

If Meyer is indeed worth 35M overall, that's still way less than Sakho and Benteke (fee+wages). And that 35M is over 5 years if he hits all his performance targets. He might end up costing us less than Schlupp (which I consider to be our most average player) but might have a much higher impact.

If someone big comes in for him in 3 years time, we'll make more than that 35million back on him so can only be a good deal for us in the long term.

Yes, I think that's what Parish is counting on too. His contribution on the pitch will help us become more established and the money we'll eventually get for him will allow to improve the squad in 2-3 years' time.

Of course, it will be catastrophic (financially) if we go down and we can't sell him as we'll need to pay his wages and even half of his wage (if he goes on loan the host club pays half) would burden us. But hopefully that won't happen

If this guy is as good as he apparently is, then this is a fantastic move. With Spurs and Chelsea sniffing around Zaha, in order to keep him at Palace, we need to be moving forward. If this is the cost of keeping Zaha at Palace then I am all for it.

Five years ago, when we signed Dwight Gayle, I remember thinking that this was a shrewd signing because when we got relegated, he would bring the Championship firepower we needed to get back up.

We now have Benteke, Zaha, Townsend, Meyer (hopefully), Sakho, Van Aanholt - Internationals with Premiership quality and all players who would have been marquee signings back in 2013.

Exciting times.
