I met a woman a couple of years ago who had two young children named - wait for it - Arthur and Elsie! OK, it did sound as if she'd given birth to an elderly couple, but traditional, meaningful names that don't need to be constantly repeated or spelled out for people are still around.

Those old fashioned names are making a comeback with Freddie, Harry, George and Charlie being examples of very popular names

Understood. I took the poster as meaning that the 'De' prefix had become commonplace i.e. was being use by people who weren't African-American.

My parents were Irish and both me and my brother had De in our name.

He was DeOlderone and I was DeYoungerone.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

Never heard of Fletcher Christian then?

Yes realise it may have been used as a christian name a couple of hundred years ago. Then again so was Gaylord, and I can't see that coming back into fashion soon. For me Fletcher just sums up memories of Porridge.

It seems so many people want to call their child something different or spell it different. Recently for Amy I've seen Aimee and Amiiee.

Yeah, but almost always the cutesy nickname version. Never Frederick, Charles etc.

YT, it’s not really delusional in this case. It’s more to emphasise their black roots, community, identity, a separation from white America because of poverty, lack of or fewer opportunities and all that stuff. But really all they’re doing is putting their kid at a disadvantage and setting their pay ceiling very very low.

The worst ones are when they just make up a name and stick a random apostrophe in it somewhere to boot.

There is a woman with Hippie parents here called Sunovar - her surname is Hoare. That is not a joke.

Poor little lad. I've known a child to be called Isaac Hunt, and my lad's best friends Dad is Mike Hunt. He always laughs about it and says it once helped get him a job as he joked about it during the interview.

It's the using of surnames as first names also seems to be a trend. McKenzie..it's a surname not a christian name. A lad at my daughters school is called Fletcher. When i hear his Mum calling his name, my natural thought is to launch into Porridge ''Norman Stanley Fletcher you are a habitual criminal''. Wonder if he has a brother called Godber?

The Scots are past masters at this sort of thing, as Billy Connolly observed some years ago:

"'Alasdair! Have you seen Farquhar?'
'Oh yes, Farquhar's over there with Finlay.
Finlay and Henderson. They're talking to Campbell.
'Are they really?' 'Yes. Campbell's talking to Robertson and Robertson's talking to Farquhar and Farquhar's talking to Phillips.'

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

Wow, I haven't hear 'titsalina' used since my mother was a young woman!
Used to be a name used for any woman with a big bust who showed it off to her advantage i.e. 'flaunted herself'
