I gather from your user name you sit in the Arthur therefore get to experience the atmosphere without having to be amongst them. This is the difference

Fair point, but actually I stand in the AW and am surrounded by singers. No flags or drums, granted, but it gets pretty boisterous - or at least it did till the atmosphere took a dip.

Everything used to flow from the HF. The noise was certainly not limited to there, but that section fired the starting gun and everyone else joined in. Perhaps if we'd never had that, the rest of the stadium would pick up now. But since we became so reliant on them, their absence is a major blow.

All-knowing, all-seeing

You're more than 10 years out of date. Stewards don't bother anymore, and legislation is powerless.

Safe standing will be legal in the Prem by December, Spurs have already put it in

I strongly doubt that but time will tell I guess

This is a fair point. I as well as many others remember times at Palace before the HF when the atmosphere was every bit as good. Sometimes better. And you could argue the singers were even more committed as it was through darke periods of relegations, administrations, mainly second tier football where the stadium was half full or less. Rarely if ever have the HF had to whip up an atmosphere in those circumstances.
And those same fans that sung their hearts out then, many of which are still turning up each week may have become a little complacent. started relying on HF to sing the songs and just join in when in the mood. Let them take the lead in which songs are sung. Or in some cases prefer to sing some of the older songs (Oh South London, We are Palace super Palace, etc)
Given time, and it wont be too long, some of those fans will pick up the baton and run with it and the noise will return. They are not the be all and end all regardless of what outsiders in the media try to ram down our throat and who dont attend the games at Palace anywhere near as often as us supporters.

I was one of those. Best time probably was when we were standing in the Arthur, under the TV gantry. It just was never a patch on the HF. Songs didn't last as long. They weren't as constant. Sure, we had a few immense times at really big games. But not the constant singing even during the dour times that we get from the HF. Rose tinted memory methinks.

TheUltras are the modern day equivalent of the old hardcore brigade that stood in the middle of the homesdale before it was covered.
Songs like ‘I bought an old crow bar.... and ‘if you go down to the homesdale road your sure for a big surprise......
Those were the days of the skineads and singing was very loud but didn’t carry because no cover.
Nowadays everything is far gentler. We sit we are covered. We are much softer and the HF are the modern day equivalent. When they return in the middle it will be the full circle from the past. I for one can’t wait. It is restoring what we had back in the seventies. Bring it on!!!

What about an old fashioned compromise?

The HF can come back but only if they promise to adopt an open policy on chants.

And stop bullying people (as some have alleged)

I very much like that suggestion. There has been give and take with the HF and the club. How about some much needed give and take with fellow Palace fans? Who lets face it, outnumber them 260 to one!

Not at all. I'd tend to turn that on its head and suggest you are magnifying the impact of HF in your own head and blowing it out of proportion.
I can actually remember a few games last season when they were as silent as anyone else in the ground.
Not as relentless as many portray them to be.

SP’s programme notes make it absolutely clear that the players want and need the HF... “because [it makes them]they play better...”

He acknowledges it was a difficult decision and respects that a few people have had to sacrifice a few seats.

However, it is now clear from those at the top, the management, the players and a HUGE section of fans that the HF are wanted and needed.

to all the Nigel’s!!!!
