I think it's just a tad ironic that this thread has unanimous support for the notion that modern journalism is complete rubbish and yet we have 65+ pages of worried supporters on the subject of Wilf leaving the club on another thread, which would never have been given the fuel to burn like it has if it wasn't for the same crap journalism that we refer to here.

Abraham Lincoln once said, "You can fool some of the people all of the time and some of the people all of the time. However, you can't fool all the people all of the time." Your 65 pages of people losing their heads over the latest Wilf rumour may very well be some of the people. I noticed that on yesterday's gossip page over at bbc.com they ran both the Mirror "story" an a photo of the front page. I realized that Auntie was making its own comment by putting it on the Gossip page and not reporting it as news. Sky News Transfer Centre totally ignored it from what I could see. So, the two most prominent online media web sites didn't give the whole thing much credence if any.

The takeaway for me is really to learn to ignore sites like Bleacher Report. They will run with anything without so much as a by your leave. To my mind, they are in danger of becoming sport's answer to Info Wars, which is being sued all over the place for its reckless disregard of the truth. Meanwhile, their original story reporting bot the Mirror and the Mail's fantasies is not readily available.

I think there are still people about who aren't aware of just how much media online is about clickbait.

The nature of news has been changing for some time.

Are any other Palace getting fed up with media conspiracy and how they are trying to undermine Palace. In particular the Daily Mirror and Talksport. The latter comes as no surprise. But the Mirror every transfer window looks to spread false rumours. They have spent the whole summer coming up with false claims for Townsend, Luka, Roy and all have been rubbish. But their relentless attempts to suggest Wilf is on the verge of leaving, putting in a transfer request to openly saying he wants to engineer a move to Spurs, Everton, Dortmund and now Chelsea is just ridiculous. Lets start rubbishing them back. Who is the sports editor and is he a Brighton, Charlton or Chelsea fan. Whoever he is he is pathetic. Rant over. So excited for the new season great signings too.

What gets me is how easy it is still proving to be for national media esp.tabloids to lie about so much whilst simply getting away with it. Whatever happened to Levenson?

Ask Ian Hislop. Seriously. Judging from YouTube he seems to feel no compunction whatsoever to take responsibility for what is published.

This is a problem. However, it's a problem where many possible cures would be worst than the disease.

Who exactly is going to be the decider on what is and isn't truth? This is what has to be very very carefully worked on.

In a fantasy land where you could set up a court system which will work for free and decide on these things it would be constantly overloaded with claims....Many of which would be risible.

Also if you continually fine the press you are going to have a muted press......which in some regards it already is. The press is basically a megaphone for the agenda of its individual owners.

Personally I think what Elon Musk referred to was a nice half way house.....seeing as the state is so fond of league tables and the media has used them to knock public services for so long we should rate journalists publicly.

Journalists that don't research and are lazy and dishonest can be rated objectively. The criteria being objectivity and honesty. However the panel on this kind of thing must be as politically objective as possible.

That made me laugh out loud. And think of the consequences for fish and chips in such a newspaper but that is not a good combo!

A League Table for Journalists/publications, I like that idea.

I believe that we get the media that we deserve and Britain has dumbed down considerably in recent decades. It seems that Brits are hungry for gossip and all the media is doing is obliging them and like all gossip some of it is true and some isn't.

When I was young the press (both tabloid and broadsheet) used to write reports on matches and not much else but it's comparatively recently that people want to know what an England International's wife is wearing or similar rubbish

I fear that this is worryingly accurate.
