In their hour of need they state they are a voice for the voiceless!! I guess that's only if your left wing. Are you a voice for the proud English?

From the guardian

"Since you’re here…

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

The Guardian is editorially independent, meaning we set our own agenda. Our journalism is free from commercial bias and not influenced by billionaire owners, politicians or shareholders. No one edits our Editor. No one steers our opinion. This is important because it enables us to give a voice to the voiceless, challenge the powerful and hold them to account. It’s what makes us different to so many others in the media, at a time when factual, honest reporting is critical.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps to support it, our future would be much more secure. You can support the Guardian with a monthly contribution of £5, £10 or £20 – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.

Support The Guardian

Without 'The Guardian' we wouldn't have had such exclusive exposé as 'Windrush Scandal' led by Amelia Gentleman (wife of ..ahem...Joe Johnson MP, brother of Boris.)

In Ireland there is discussion of creating a government fund to support 'print media' Newspapers. Mainly Sinn Fein which is rather ironic as they never like the newspapers bringing up their 'activities' from the past. Don't think the funding will happen but there is a chance. Newspapers just aren't going to survive in their current form.

Agreed but there are many prints that expose scandal

(Tongue firmly in cheek)
What I mean is that they do find things you may not really ever know about.
Right left and middle so as a group they are a benefit for that.
And problem pages, page 3 and sport obviously.

I think the bigger issue is local newspapers dying out. We need them to hold local government officials to account and report on local crime etc and play a role in the community like they used to. Unfortunately, they are no longer commercially viable.

The BBC gets millions of pounds through the licence fee and face no commercial challenges. So I feel they have a duty to protect local news by subsidising local media outlets with cash or at least sharing resources, such as court reports, photographs and video.

It is different because I have restricted access to the Times and Telegraph stories, but am able to read any article on the Grauniad. The subscriber model is possibly more lucrative too.

He does not literally say that - he only infers it.

I’m asking what the constructive point is?

They do through local radio and TV. The BBC is a broadcast media outlet not print media. You are correct about the demise of local newspapers but you will need to find an alternative source of funding.

What is the 'constructive point' in you asking?
