What's happening there isn't in itself different from what happened when people wrote in Morse code, sent telegrams or composed newspaper headlines (a manager doesn't "consider" or even "look at" a prospective player; he "eyes" him). The difference is of course that in this instnce there is a sociolinguistic caste in which such language use is assigned prestige.
