Back before the progressive left destroyed comedy you could make jokes about groups and you could make jokes about what people wear......without a movement trying to sack you or other unpersoning attempts.

Hmm, I can see where this thread is heading. Was the comment funny; should he be allowed to say it without being attacked by interest groups?

Commenting from another angle, why did he say it? Boris Johnson is the biggest zeitgeist whore in British politics. You name it, if it is popular he will attach himself to it. He has seen how populism can benefit a politician with the success of his pal across the Pond. He can see that you can get away with openly mocking the disabled, blatant racism and misogyny. There will be a strong power base of people who are not appalled but will actually lap it up.

He knows that in a recent poll, a whopping 25% of Brits described themselves as anti-Islam. You can bet that a substantial % of that group are likely to be older and will probably be voters. He knows that too.

His point is a no-brainer. A ban on the burkha is ludicrous. You will either fine women who are dressing how they want; or you are fining the victims of oppression. However, his so called jokes were the real political point.

He is not-so-cleverly seeking to attract the support from that politically active but largely neglected corner of Britain to boost his prospects of securing the top job. It is a high risk tactic and - irrespective of whether I agree with the politics or not - I for one hope it fails.

His model Trump is a fairly disgusting character who has tapped into the lowest base of his nation's psyche AND is an astute businessman who has steered the US economy into prosperous waters. Boris is ONLY the first one. He is a man who really needs to disappear into the political wilderness quickly. He is bad for this country.

Having lived in several European countries for extended periods, I've never come across anyone who makes fun of someone else's language. I've only had this experience when I lived in the UK and when I make occassional visits. It's pre-teen level humour in the UK that's spread to adults, very weird indeed. If you find that funny then you need to travel the world a little more.

I found it insulting to the nationalities involved and a definite zero on content of humour. Still, I'm not surprised that a contingent of UK citizens find humour in insulting others as it's a sign of an inferiority complex and feeling threatened by those who they think will come and take away what they have.

There was a reason British comedy was once revered around the world.

It wasn't because of opinions like yours.
