The Coppell/Wright/Bright/Martyn era was a fab time to watch them on the pitch, they were a pretty special team that just clicked. My favourite part was when Salako (the super sub) came on and the crowd chants.

Hard to compare the squads but we dont have anything like that Wright/Bright connection in the current team.

Its a very good squad, how do people (who really knew that team) think it compares to the team of the 80s?

Account for increased fitness levels and pace in the modern day game i.e. try and eliminate that as a factor.

Grew up as a kid watching the team of the 80s (late 70s-early 80s)

The team today are in general far better in midfield but the team of the 80s were imho better at the back.

Both teams pretty damn average up front (that's where the team of the late 80s - early nineties would wipe the floor)

Completely agree.

Individually the 4 players who have come in might be better than the 4 strongest players who left but combined the 7 or 8 players who left are stronger than the 4 who came in.

Simple.

Hmm. At the start of last season Sako was a write off and Tim unknown.

During the season both were often absent as was RLC.

Each had patches of brilliance. But better a good player 100 percent of the time than a mercurial player 40 %.

We just don’t know how good Meyer is but the others are clearly very good premier league players. Ayew was the players player of the season for Swansea. None of our leavers was a contender for that accolade at Palace

Didn’t like Flanagan and Allen? Vince Hilaire on the wing? Jumpers for goal posts blah blah

Mike Flanagan, temember him scoring a hatrick for us, possibly against Southampton. Wouldn't even make our reserves now.

Hilaire and Allen were quality though, not that we saw the best of Allen.

The “best” squad isn’t necessarily the best group of individuals we’ve ever had. It’s also about how well the team collectively works with eachother and fits into the style of play the manager wants to implement.

Thus, we won’t know until the end of the season.

Sako was good for about 2 games and you can count on 1 hand the amount of times TFM was really needed and not picked for loan relationship reasons.

We now have Bissaka and Ward at RB. Ok with 4 CB’s there is a risk but Kouyate can play there so we effectively have 5 and with 5 centrally capable midfielders we should be alright there also.

I’m just not interested in people trying to use the loss the likes of Lee’s ability in part of the 7-8 that had to go to play down the individual and total benefit of the additions to the squad. The club has deserved flack in recent windows but this isn’t one of them. If we couldn’t improve those squad numbers and kept them I’d be pretty fecked off. I’d rather have a few under 25 Prem quality players than a few lumps of sh1t making up the numbers on £35k or £65k per week thank you.

That's a stretch. Nicholas and Murphy were both top class

With the greatest respect, I, and I suspect the vast majority of our supporters cannot possibly see us reaching such heady heights this season but we can of course pray !

I still have some concerns about our defence and hopefully we will not show any fragility against Fulham who have spent some £100 Mill strengthening their squad for the PL.

In terms of our current squad I believe that it is strong enough for a mid-table finish or perhaps slightly higher.

As we all know, you can spend a fortune buying dozens of quality players, but they won't necessarily bond into a good team........which is the one thing that we have, players playing for each other!

Really?

Murphy top class? The same Murphy who got three caps for Ireland.

Whilst good players and boyhood heros of mine you can't argue they are better than Zaha, Meyer, Luka or Townsend.
