An absolutely horrifying event and I am sure that we have all seen the pictures and experienced that collective inhalation of breath at the magnitude of what happened.

But what I never expected was the political ramifications of it. Seen plenty of tweets over the last 24 hours which point to this tragedy perhaps becoming a an issue where the ramifications, in terms of Italy and the Euro, play out over the next couple of months in terms of how the Italians wish to challenge many assumptions about how the single currency is managed and the impact that has had on their economy.

It has been clear that many in the EU have decided that Salvani and the new coalition in Italy are best ignored for the time being, it obvious that for the time being they are keen to avoid any more conflict with it after they did their best to stop them even forming the current ruling coalition but this has the potential to be a real game changer.

These lot allegedly objected to a new bridge before they came to power.
An argument which has cost innocent lives.

Even if they hadn't, they couldn't have tendered for it and rebuilt in 6 months.

I think the ones who awarded the contract to Autostrade per l'Italia are more culpable.

It was built for traffic levels in the 60s and to be honest it looked like it was past it's sell by date.

Optimistic as ever

Much of the A10 through Genoa is elevated, and above dwellings and businesses, and rather begs the question 'when is the next section going to collapse'?

Money that couldn't be found previously will miraculously be made available for infrastructure work.

Given the state of the Italian economy it'll come (if at all) at a heavy price.
