Schar definitely makes contact with the ball but he wraps his legs around Alonso in a scissor action. In pre-season meetings with the players and clubs, they were informed that just because a player makes contact with the ball, it doesn't mean that no foul can be awarded against the player making the tackle.

But I suspect we will all see many instances of players in similar circumstances bellowing out "Ref - I got the ball" !

Ok so if all challenges like this are a foul so why was it against Liverpool they had a player do something just like this on our player in the box and every one said it was a great tackle he got the ball first.

You sound like these refs making it up as you go along

Returning to the incident in question, there is of course a pandemic view that the challenge was worthy of a Red.

I am just pondering whether the referee's attention was drawn to the ball which was relatively some way ahead of Zaha and so he was not fully focussed on the challenge which was some distance from the ball and as such could have intrepreted it as merely a trip.He will have to explain this in his post-match assessment of his performance.
So basically he did not see it in real-time as we all saw it on 'Slow-mo'.

If he had been referred to VAR and was able to take a closer look at the challenge then I am sure he would have brandished a Red.

Good try, but the referee was very weak.
He must have seen the offence because he issued a booking, and did in fact lose his "bottle" and decided not to show a red card in order not to incur the wrath of the home crowd.
It was inevitable that he would at least book Wilf at the earliest opportunity thereafter.
With such powder puff officiating we should be thankful that in the end Wilf came through the game relatively unharmed.

What part of "I have nothing to add. I'm not going to get drawn into any further debate on this matter" is it that you have difficulty in understanding

Only the bit where he has since replied on the matter 5 times!!

Unfortunately the bloke does make difficulties for himself so I won't be trying to shield him any more and the season is only just two weeks old
