I am with BT the service is fast and reliable and almost never goes down. BT customer service however is poor but as I don't need to call them because they are reliable it is not a consideration.

In my area all the providers can support good speed so that is also not a consideration for me.

I look at value for money and TV content as the key factors. BT is expensive and the TV content is so so. I have not switched because I am waiting for Sky to fully launch their non Satellite service. I may then switch to that when my contract runs out as I expect they will be stronger in those areas or I may stay if BT decides to compete.



Pay no attention to anything Which seize they are clearly paid off or biased.

The key is don't go for bundles they may appear good value but not really and it creates a mess if you want to leave/migrate away.

Sky are awful company and there service you are on about wont be any better then what there junior company Nowtv are already offering maybe 4k as extra but why would you want a service purely internet when you can get cable/sat which are much better/reliable.

Having iptv around the house is not good you have to have very high speed pure fibre which lol Sky don't have they are to cheap to build there own national network like to leach of others for everything

Im with virgin and get a great service both primary at home and secondary with their customer service.
I think all providers have satisfied and un satisfied customers.

1. I am surprised by your statement about Which. They are known for being independent and are funded by their members. If they were biased or taking a bung I would have thought the media would be onto that.

2. I live in a flat we are not allowed satellite TV so I have never had the Sky product. You maybe right about them I will see when they offer the product.

3. I already have IPTV around my home my broadband speed is currently 75MBS it could be faster if I wanted a more expensive package. As I mentioned I am lucky all of the providers can deliver high speed so for me this is not an issue it maybe for others.

4. As I tried to explain in my post its horses for courses. My brother lives in a small village his issues is broadband speed and lack of choice. All of the major providers can supply me so other factors such as price and TV content are my key issues.

5. You maybe right about bundles you just have to hunt around to find the one that suits you.

I am with Virgin Media, which on the whole I am happy with. pretty reliable, and good customer service, but they endlessly put their prices up...

I do not have a BT Phone line coming into my house, as Virgin does not require it...
Does anyone know if BTPhone lines are required for all the other services, as used to be the norm?

You have to have a physical line for the broadband although I don't believe you have to take their telephone service, however the last time I looked it made no difference money wise so I have a BT landline deal.

You make an interesting point though. Virgin, Openreach / BT have invested a fortune in fibre optic and physical lines yet I can see a day when services will be delivered wirelessly. Much the same as Sky are ditching their satellite infrastructure I can see mobile 5G or its successor meaning the end of telephone lines.

Thanks badger, There was time where everything you did - and whichever service You used - you needed to have a landline number. Neither Sky TV nor Virginmedia require this anymore. I was wondering if the Alternatives mentioned on this thread still require you to have some kind of physical line attached to your house.
Currently I have a Virginmedia Fibre only attached. If I wanted to switch to Plusnet for example, would I even be able to?

I have TalkTalk with the new Wi-Fi Hub. Pay £21.50 a month for faster fibre. Only about 40mb but does me perfect. Netflix, Xbox one X, IPTV all run perfect.

If your home has a telephone line (even disused) then yes. If not I guess Plusnet would charge to have one installed.

I was with Virgin for many years they ticked the boxes on pretty much everything except price. They kept getting more and more expensive whilst not providing anything more, kinda like the railways.

I told them I was switching to BT and they didn't care until BT notified them. I was then getting daily phone calls and the deal from Virgin kept getting better. However I am old fashioned and I had given my word to BT. Besides I don't like a company that screws you until you walk away and then suddenly they offer you a decent deal (blimey sounds like Brexit).

Anyway I now take the attitude I am loyal to no one I go for the best deal.

Not under any circumstances chose BT. Truly dreadful in every way. Customer Service values of Heinrich Himmler.

1. trust me they are not independent they may claim this but they get perks and are loyal to some brands/companies (I knew two people that worked for them many years ago used to show off lots of goods they was given)

2. never heard of people in flats not allowed sat tv and tends to be if they say you can't have it its due to they already offer communal dish.

3. 75mb is that the package or the throughput you get? If you was getting 75mb through put it's still got great for a family if every one is using 4k/hd tv plus whatever else they are doing (for 2-3 people may be ok but still depends on activities this is another reason Sky Q is flop with so many issues it uses iptv as well)

I would always suggest to pay more to not be bundled being locked to one company for it all is not good.

it has shown how they keep upping the prices every year fair amount so if you got bundle that is going up a lot also if you are separate you can switch about getting deals without hassle of worrying if you will lose everything or be locked into a big contract.

The Consumer Association is a charity isn't it = so maybe staff get stuff to test - I wouldn't be put off by a Which recommendation.

1. Until I see some evidence I have found Which to be a good tool. Like most things I do not follow anyone blindly but so far the stuff they recommend has been good. At the very least it gives you a benchmark to compare against if you can find better so be it.

2. Really banning dishes is common in Beckham because they are unsightly. A communal dish is acceptable but you have to have enough people prepared to pay for it. We own and run our block of flats so it is majority vote my neighbours do not want dishes small or communal hence the ban.

3. 75mps is plenty for me but if you have a family with teenagers I can see that may not be enough. Like I said you have to decide what is important to you so in that case speed would be a factor.
