What gets me is the 'support' she has received from elsewhere - the WTA has said come our in support of Williams as has Sue Barker citing that she was treated differently than she would hav ebeen in the mens game. The Umpire applied the rules to the letter. Surely this isn't him being Sexist - unless he has ruled the Same situations different when umpiring a mens match (which noone has even suggested) The issue seems to be why are the rules not applied correctly in other situations.

On 5Live this morning, a newspaper tennis correspondent explained the sequence of events and how the umpire had been correct at every stage (his feminist co-contributor having confessed that she didn’t know much about tennis or how its rules worked). Her reaction was that a white, male umpire could never ‘walk in [Serena’s] shoes’ as a black, female athlete in a white male dominated world, therefore was wrong to judge her so harshly. I’ve never heard such claptrap in all me life...including during the 18 months I’ve been a member of HOL.

Assuming for a minute that Serena is right then she and the WTA should go to the governing body with the evidence that women players are being unfairly treated. Screaming abuse at the umpire in the middle of a game is not the way to correct it. I wonder how many times Roger Federer has felt a decision has gone against him but he has just sucked it up and got on with the game.

I listened to that too and it was noticeable that agreement or criticism was along "party" lines with all of the obviously black females (judging by their accents) that rung in siding with Mr Williams, the men slating her behaviour with the rest of the women callers being split between both camps

I've never really liked tennis that much. Back in the day it was unmissable, much like snooker and darts. Now I don't watch any of those sports, there are no characters, no one to get behind. Serena, is the only star in the whole of tennis I root for. From day one people has been waiting for her to fall on her ar5e but I think she has conducted herself in a manner that I like. She should get on well with Sandi Toksvig who has been publicly complaining that she only gets paid 40% of what Stephen Fry got for presenting QI and puts that down to her gender

If the rating for the show hold up under her stewardship then yes she should get a pay rise but she first has to prove it. Back to the tennis I just heard a tennis journalist say that the umpires are furious with the WTA (and may strike) for throwing them under the bus by backing Serena. As I said previously if there are issues then sort it out off court.

This is a good point because whether the decision is correct or not if you lose your cool and focus, your game will suffer, especially in a solo sport like tennis. Most pro's like Federer, good example, keep themselves mentally in the zone and don't let judgement calls affect their game

Women's matches get less viewers yet equal pay with the men. Women play less sets yet have equal pay with the men. You see it's not about real equality that's blind to difference and just rewards on merit. It's about ideological equality. Edited by Stirlingsays (10 Sep 2018 3.43pm)
