As Hrolf indicated, the resistance comes from employers. Remote working is the future.

Agreed and something that many employers should seriously consider in order to motivate and keep staff and boost productivity when aligned with improving wellbeing of employees. Cutting back upon travel costs and the rigours of commuting would prove to be a beneficial finance + time saver.

Will probably just end up being the public sector, if it happened.

I can't see it happening in schools or the NHS. Politicians don't do a 4 day week as it is, if you don't count their 2nd jobs, side gigs or directorships etc.

Nor the construction industry, or the service industry.

its a carte blanche to charge up the office even more
as they do less

I'm all for 3 days of out of hours charging, but that's something these people don't foresee when they pluck an idea out of thin air.

I was originally against working from home until my boss pointed out that you should not design your HR policies on the assumption that a small number of people will abuse them. I became a fan and to be honest I never had any problem with my staff goofing off. In fact I found they and me were more productive as you spend less time commuting. I also found myself working later even though it didn't feel like it.

Not all jobs are suitable for home / flexible working but those employers who resist will miss out. I found that it was a huge selling point for the job.

Still don't agree with 4 day working unless the company can afford it.

Flexible/remote working is definitely future. I can't be bothered to find one, but most studies/trials have shown that people are far more productive working shorter hours or being able to work in times that are convenient to them.

My job is completely paperless and I have clients/colleagues all over the world that I need input from to be able to do my job so my 'office hours' and location are largely irrelevant.

I think the cute little pixie walked right into that one.

I'm lucky to be able to WFH one day a week and also do overtime at home if I want. I often go home and do a few hours in the evening so would happily do a four day week but my boss is against it sadly as I have asked previously. At the moment I seem to be doing an extra day at the weekend but that is overtime and from home.

Main reason I would like it is because I have to travel to Park Royal from Thornton Heath which is a three hour round trip. It's not a great journey.

The goal should be 4-hour Work Week (Tim Ferriss).
