Exactly, why the church? Why not the government, they were quick enough to wade in and rescue the banks.

If anything the government are in part responsible and deregulation of the banking industry allowed companies like Wonga to lend large amounts to those who could never afford to repay it atcrazy interest rates.

Some might just view this as an example of the free market but even after market surely has to come with a degree of social responsibility.

Wonga and those like them have ruined and in some cases taken people's lives. It can not be wrong to speak out against irresponsible lending.

Indeed, the Church have a responsibility to do that.....if they were actually practicing what was in their own books.

But anyone who has actually read the Bible knows just how pick and choose it is.....even accounting for modern day interpretation.

The Free Market has no social responsibility....that's for regulation......You don't ask a shark not to bite.....You exclude items from the menu.

The government is the 'taxpayer'....they are to blame for none of this.

The Bible is not a single book, it is a collection of works written by different people at different times. It does within itself contradict and challenge itself.

Don't disagree (bloody he'll!) the point you make around regulation/deregulation. Governments off all colours have deregulated financial systems to a degree where a while back it was like the wild west.

This government is not the taxpayer
This government is run by those who are rich enough to arrange their tax affairs in such a way as to pay as little tax as possible and then pay accountants to minimise the rest. Something others can not afford to do.

The Bible is perfectly clear on usury, no contradictions there.

Regulation is a balancing act.....There has to be a 'free' element to the 'free market'....otherwise investment will just head off to where the freedom exists.

That's a separate point with which I have some sympathy.

I just wanted to make the point that people shouldn't view the government...of whatever type as anything other than a public body of mainly arses paid for by the 'taxpayer'....Our taxes are mainly the product of hard working people and we shouldn't treat what they produce as a lottery fund....but guard the money jealousy and try to maximise value.

The Church Commissioners are better now than they used to be.
