Correct Johnoo,

The tackle at Huddersfield would have been a red also had it been done on Hazard .

Would VAR help ? Not sure as I am sure it is was stated that VAR dor red cards would only be used for cases of mistaken identity. If the Ref chooses to only book the player what can be done ?

Yellow cards for the Capoue tackle and the tackle by the Huddersfield thug on Saturday just give the thugs the green light to put a career threatening tackle in on Wilf every game and not get sent off. Get booked ? no problem pass the fouling onto a team mate that has not been booked.

I disagree, I think that it was given a yellow as the ref was Attempting to Be lenient as it was early in the game; which Is wrong, such things should not determine punishment.

Also, a Couple of seasons back i remember there was a game where Hazard was obviously Targeted - which i think was the last time this issue came up. So the Fact that it was Zaha not Hazard had no affect on the decision.

By coming onto MOD and complaining so vehemently Wilf has only shown his concern. This will be noted by other defenders and will be used to intimidate Wilf more.
Palace need to be clever. If Wilf is so marked, by at least two players all the time and more when he has the ball, this must release space for others to use. I do not see much of that. I wonder how defenders would feel,if Wilf went so deep these defenders were well out of position? It is an open field for someone.

The funny thing is I remember when our defenders used to kick the opposing strikers all over the pitch and nobody shouted for us to stop.

Anyone remember the matches v Everton in the early 90s? Eric Young breaking Keown's nose (albeit not a striker) in the ZDS Final, etc.

I don't approve of Zaha getting hacked all over the place but what's good for the goose is good for the gander. We can't have double morals about this.

Thats all well and good; but we're not in that era now are we. Tackling is an art, a combination of timing and decision making.

Its eradication has left us with players that do not know how to win a ball cleanly anymore, and as such with players that a far more finely tuned than those of yesteryear (even the 90's) it more dangerous.

In the good old days you could slide in, win the ball as the opponent flies over your head on a muddy wet pitch. It was deemed a good tackle then...not now.

So lets not fall into the trap of comparing it the anything we used to do or see 20 years ago....like Lineker and Shearer did

Wilf would benefit hugely from watching Messi and the way he conducts himself on the pitch. If he controls his temper he destroys opponents. That goal he scored Saturday was as good as any Messi, Ronaldo solo effort, in fact I would go as far as to say it was sublime and that is how you show the opposition who is boss.

Different types of tackling though...in Spain you get more 'cynical' nudges, blocking and pulling...we're talking about potentially career threatening tackles in the Watford and Huddersfield scenarios. Messi get crowded out most of the time, not assaulted in a one on one situation.

Funnily enough though when Sergio Ramos did it to Mo Salah it went down like a s***e sandwich at a wedding.

I'm not talking about 'good old days' and whatnot and no some things Palace players got up to in the 90s were not okay at the time and would be called 'sh*thousery' even then.

My point is some Palace fans like our defenders to let some opposition players know they are 'in England' but don't like it when it happens to our players.

How many Palace fans just 4 years ago liked it when Suarez, Terry, etc got tough tackled and blatantly fouled? When Jedi was giving out no-nonsense tackles in midfield? How about Man City at home last season?

As I said, I am not saying it is okay for Zaha to get kicked but some Palace fans don't mind us dishing it out but don't like it when some clubs come up and give it to us.

Football is a contact sport. Zaha complaining that he feels he can't do some skills because he might get fouled isn't getting sympathy from me because if Ronaldo was playing against us I'd hope he'd not be allowed to pi*s about like he used to.

So you agree the ref was wrong and it was a red card offence .

You just don't think it would be more more likely that it would have been red if it was Hazard.
I think it would .

Anyway can anyone answer the question of would VAR have helped ? Bearing in mind the referee booked the players and as far as I can recall VAR for reds card offences was to sort out mistaken Id ?

Good article in the Sun about Wilf, something I thought I'd never say.

TBF he was set up a bit. Straight after the match, what was the first thing he was asked? Good 3 points? Great goal? No....you were on the end of some tasty challenges there wilf....on the spur of the moment, what's he supposed to say...

yes I do believe it was a red, and the ref was wrong. He tried to not 'spoil' the game by sending someone off so early - which is a farcical excuse, but one which ref often seem To apply. So no, I don't think it would have been given against Hazard either.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Growing Support For Wilf' by bexleydave

Nice to see quite a few pundits coming out and showing support for Wilf and his treatment on theback of his interview.

A mate just pointed me to this article doing just that in todays Sun

It should be, but its not anymore. The real issue is the standard of reffing...giving fouls for nudges and letting assaults go with barely a yellow.

As I said earlier, there's nothing wrong in my book for good hard (but fair) tackling...as I said, its an art which has been sadly lost.
