I'm not talking about 'good old days' and whatnot and no some things Palace players got up to in the 90s were not okay at the time and would be called 'sh*thousery' even then.

My point is some Palace fans like our defenders to let some opposition players know they are 'in England' but don't like it when it happens to our players.

How many Palace fans just 4 years ago liked it when Suarez, Terry, etc got tough tackled and blatantly fouled? When Jedi was giving out no-nonsense tackles in midfield? How about Man City at home last season?

As I said, I am not saying it is okay for Zaha to get kicked but some Palace fans don't mind us dishing it out but don't like it when some clubs come up and give it to us.

Football is a contact sport. Zaha complaining that he feels he can't do some skills because he might get fouled isn't getting sympathy from me because if Ronaldo was playing against us I'd hope he'd not be allowed to pi*s about like he used to.

It should be, but its not anymore. The real issue is the standard of reffing...giving fouls for nudges and letting assaults go with barely a yellow.

As I said earlier, there's nothing wrong in my book for good hard (but fair) tackling...as I said, its an art which has been sadly lost.

Football is a Contact sport, but it is not a FULL Contact sport.
this [Link] defines it quite nicely (even if it is from the US!)
Shoulder barges are probably the only instance in the game that contact is allowed in the rules. Tackling in football is a grey area - Contact in a tackle is not really in the rules but some contact is inevitable which is why the Excessive Force rule was implemented, so it's accepted as part of the game without really being in the rules.

The funny thing is I remember when our defenders used to kick the opposing strikers all over the pitch and nobody shouted for us to stop.

Anyone remember the matches v Everton in the early 90s? Eric Young breaking Keown's nose (albeit not a striker) in the ZDS Final, etc.

I don't approve of Zaha getting hacked all over the place but what's good for the goose is good for the gander. We can't have double morals about this.

I assume ‘etc’ includes Keown exacting revenge on the Ninja in the subsequent league game at Selhurst Park, for which he received his marching orders.

I know what the rules state, shame the refs dont, or more to the point (to prevent any further pedantry) don't appear to.

The shoulder barge/collision is ironically the greyest area of all..how many times do they call a foul for one outside the box, but then allow the same inside.

Consistency is what's required, as well as an understanding through experience of having played the game. That way tackles the like of which we've seen in both the Watford and Huddersfield games would be straight reds.

Consistency is difficult when there is pressure - mainly from Pundits - to 'use their common sense' rather than implement the rules. How often have we heard the ref should not have sent a player off in the interest of keeping the spectacle or other such drivel.
It's not the ref's fault that player 1 attempted to break someones leg in the opening minutes of a game.

He will always get kicked but the Capoue one the one on Saturday were deliberate, nasty, vicious and possibly season ending tackles.
That is the difference and those tackles should be outlawed.

Yes, they're under pressure from players, managers, spectators, and even "pundits". But that's why their hourly wage rate for what they do (at least in the Premiership) is a multiple of what the average worker gets, and it's no justification for not applying the rules according to their own best judgment, irrespective of any other considerations. They don't all do that.

Pedantry alert! Isn’t it shoulder ‘charge’ and not ‘barge’? It always used to be called that, but maybe it was always a colloquialism ie not a term used in the laws. Anyone know?

Thought it was Geoff Thomas who busted Keown's nose.

Theoretically yes but actually no because if they were they would have been red cards.
Also outlawed tackles should be subject to retrospective punishment.

In other words they would be if the officials bothered their arses to do their jobs properly.
