I'm not too surprised - it's all because of a lack of goal threat.

It was obvious we needed to go big on someone to replace/compete with Benteke. Jordan Ayew (roughly 1 goal in every 5 games for Swansea and Villa) was unlikely to be that player.

I too have been a bit surprised (esp after the good run of friendlies before the season started). But with no Cabaye and no Loftus-Cheek, is it really that surprising?

That’s the key point I think. Really important players like Cabaye and Loftus Cheek, and what we have done at best is replace them with players like Meyer and Ayew who are still finding their way. We have not spent big to actually add to the quality of last year. Arguably the squad as a whole is weaker than last year. Having said that, a year ago were on zero points and adrift at the bottom of the table. The fact that we are 11th on 7 points is in that context a huge achievement given how little in net terms we have spent on players. If we can finish the season mid table but without the terrible struggles we have had with relegation previously that would be a huge achievement. For a club of our size and relatively small spending power compared to the man city’s etc that’s good enough.

My benchmark is 12 points from 12 games and that is actually going to be very tough now based on our next 6 fixtures, Bournemouth, Wolves, Everton, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham. Need a win and a couple of draws to be there. Happy to have this season between 10th-15th and no flirting with relegation. Certainly will need better performances in these 6 than the first 6 to achieve this.

My benchmark is 40 points after 38 games. We are looking Ok for that. 11 wins in 31 games.

Don’t move the ball fast enough and of course we don’t have a goal scorer

Sums us up perfectly at the moment!!

But on a positive note, we’ve got 7 points on the board without playing well, we only had 5 towards the end of November last year, so we’ve got plenty of time to shape up.

In pre-season our net spend was some £10 Mill which is a relevant pittance in PL terms.

Huddersfield net spend was £33 Mill, whilst Brighton's was some £52 Mill.

Average start, average team. No huge surprise - on course for around the same tally of points as last year.
A good striker would transform us but cannot see much happening with us being comfortable enough.

It’s a game of small margins. Both Sakho and Ward (vs Watford) should have scored. If they had we would be on 10 points and this thread would have an entirely different feel.

West Ham spent £100m, so what. £18m of that on Wilshire who cant run.

Its not about how much you spend, its about if you can get the right players to improve the team and squad.

Personally think Wilf should be playing more centrally. Think his talent is nullified out wide and unless he beats three men his movement comes to nothing much.

Really think if he was more central he’d have more joy himself and more joy bring others in to play.

Still think we’ve had a positive start to the season. If we spend all season around 11th then it’s been an unstressful year for once...

I do think we’ll click in to gear soon though and give someone a pasting. It’s nice to see us playing below our best and picking points up.

Newcastle absolutely didn’t want to play, and that’s testament to our team and where we’re at. No way we’re in a relegation fight this year. And that in its self is great news.

Wilf is our best finisher and our most creative player. As such imo he should be played central.... with Andros and Jordan either side.

No idea what Max is like yet, but I’m happy with the other two signings, both look like premiership players imo.

At a guess it’ll take max time to understand the pace of the premiership and with a quality midfield this might make it tough for him to break through quickly. No doubt at some point he’ll come good..

Also feel like PVA has been asked not to break forward so much. Understand this does protect us/him from being exposed but blimey I do miss him pushing on. Also think it again limits Wilf options without his support and again means Wilf needs to beat three guys on his own and put ball in the net for us to score.

Is the team actually more balanced with Schlupp playing... think him, PVA and Wilf all click when played on the left. Maybe that’s what’s missing if Wilf is to flourish there...?

I noticed pva holding back as well.
Im not sure if he trusts sakho not to make the obligitory once a game mistake if he leaves the space just inside the halfway line.
I think its because sakho has a lack of knowing where row z is or just a defenders hoof up the park.
Much as he can find a pass its generally a guess as to what shirt that is to.
Needs to be a bit more old fashion in his defending a bit more often IMO.

I was just providing a figure in response to a poster who alluded to the fact that our net spend wasn't a great deal in PL terms. It was not meant as any criticism at all.
