probably closest to a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-1-1 depending on perspective. the extra body in midfield make a difference and letting Andros float more centrally seemed to suit him

Really hope Townsend gains something from this and starts to score in the Premier.

Splendid victory.
I suspect not too many would have predicted a 3-0 win for us.
I would be happy with a draw against Blackpool or Burton Albion in the next round !

That said Sorloth did one thing very well which was lay the ball to Andros with 2 guys around him, which allowed Townsend to get into position to hit that cracking shot.

He also made several good headed clearances from WBA corners

Mainly I would think this concerns Max Meyer who did well, but not great.

Roy may have thought Schlupp and Sorloth put a good shift in also. I dont see Puncheon being a factor, except outside nightclubs. You never know with Hodgson though, he might be talking about Joel Ward, you just never know.

Ayew did enough in about 6 minutes to tell me he is better than Sorloth up top. That said Sorloth did one thing very well which was lay the ball to Andros with 2 guys around him, which allowed Townsend to get into position to hit that cracking shot.

I doubt he means the goalie but you never know, Guaita looked very assured tonight, albeit against a lacklustre outfit.

Sounds like its all about Meyer then.
Ayew>Sorloth
Hennessey>Guaita
Meyer>Schlupp & Macca

I think its worth a try with Meyer wide left of midfield in RLCs place and Kouyate staying alongside Luka.
I'd like to see if Meyer can play in the centre with Luka at some stage as there is a chance that RLC will come back to Selhurst Park.

I’ve speculated in another thread that if Stoke progress, we could draw them away and will therefore have faced in successive away ties all three teams that were relegated from the Prem last season.

At least RH gave Meyer 30 mins last weekend, rather than the normal 15.

Meyer is not exactly setting the world on fire here, but I still think he should be starting for us.

I thought he was fantastic last night. Set the tempo of the play. Always in space and free for the ball. Great at closing down and winning back the ball. Quick first touch passing with a football brain far superior to anyone else on the pitch.

I haven't seen the stats but I would bet he touched the ball more than anyone else on the pitch? IMO he has to start for us every game from now on. He is ready.

Agreed I thought he gave a Cabaye type performance last night. He was the link man constantly busy recycling the ball.

That was a good performance and it wouldn’t have flattered us to win 5-0 as a number of chances were missed.
However, it should be borne in mind that WBA were so,poor that even Sorloth looked decent!
It was pleasing to see Townsend score a couple of very good goals and Meyer looked impressive and has a different skill set to the other midfielders.
I’m still not sure exactly how Roy will fit him into the team but I hope he gets the chance sooner rather than later.

WBA were very poor in truth. The worrying aspect is Sorloth can’t hold the ball up, every time it was played up to him, it bounced off him like a cat trying to trap a ping pong ball.
