We seem to fallen between 433 and 442, our best six non defensive players are Luka, Kouyate, McArthur, Meyer, Wilf and Townsend, the only way to fit these best players in is 442 with wilf and Townsend up front as we did to great effect last season, Wilf is now better in my opinion at the pinnacle of the team, non of our strikers are worthy of replacing any of those six

Formation is pretty irrelevant if the players play badly.

We have a knack at this club of turning silk purses into sows’ ears. It’s only the amount of money we spend in achieving it that changes (ie increases).

Personally I think our performances have gone down since schlupp was dropped. I know he's not the best player, but it gave the team a good balance. Him PVA and Wilf played well together. At the moment macarthur seems to be playing left, which for me isn't working. Not always the best players that make the best team.

I'd drop Ayew, play Schlupp on the left with Zaha and Townsend up front. Can't do any worse than we are at the moment. We actually miss Benteke too (never thought i'd say that).

True to a certain extent. Isnt a good manager meant to make average players better? Or if they cant do that create a system that works?

Townsend seems to have a good understanding with AWB, but last night he didn't seem his usual energetic self. Playing Wilf and Andros upfront only seemed to be effective for a few games as teams didn't know how to approach it, but by the end we frequently had situations where both players drifted wide and no one was in the middle. For the upcoming games we are likely to be sitting deep defending so we need someone who can hold the ball up to bring Wilf and Andros into the game. If he can get fit then Tekkers is probably our best option in this regard.

Yep. That’s certainly what happens at other clubs.

I’m concerned about the level of performances this season and think it’s largely attributable to the players rather than formation.
Other than against Fulham (second half) Watford (first half) and arguably Liverpool we have not played well.
It doesn’t help when you’re trying to bed in new players but other than Hennessy and Wann Bissaka I don’t think the players have done themselves justice.
Ayew and Sorloth don’t look capable of playing as central striker and if Zaha doesn’t turn up we have zero threat going forward.
We have 5 goals in 7 games and that sort of return over a season will leave a team struggling.
We also look more open defensively and not as well drilled as we were last season.
I like PVA but the cavalier approach of both him and Sakho will lead to goals being conceded.

My sincerest apologies if this has been covered before. Feel free to hound me however with our recent poor form and sign that things aren’t going to pick up anytime soon, would now be a good time to try a new formation? This is particularly the case now that Dann is en route back into the frame.

I’m thinking 3-5-2 with good reason. With two wing backs in PVA and AWB, I’m sure they’ve got the legs to cover defensively to make a back 5 if necessary but equally provide another option in midfield/going forward. Presently, when in the final third we look lost. Hence the lack of goals.

The three at the back would obviously be Dann, Sakho and Tomkins. They’d need to be well drilled obviously but this has potential to be reasonably solid. Especially if the wing backs provide support also, not just defensively but as an outlet also.

Midfield 3 would consist of Milivojevic, MacArthur and Meyer. Luka and Macca would sit centrally and allow Max to roam, picking up loose balls and offering creativity.

Upfront for me would see a return of Zaha and Townsend. The combination worked well last season and by offering fluidity and dragging defenders around rather than a fixed ‘one man up top’ which evidently doesn’t work for us.

I’m aware this would require training and meticulous drilling but Roy is the man to do that! We have to offer more fluidity, creativity and options going forward and I believe we have the players to do this. This formation would allow for this to happen.

What do people think?
