I believe we should be finishing between 8th & 12th after a season of solidity and not panic.

Whilst I understand the sentiment I think we've come a long way since promotion. There have been ground improvements, new pitch, lights, PA system, disabled access etc all needed to remain in the PL. The squad is probably the best we've had but that could be said for most PL teams as the league has improved/got tougher year on year. To put things into perspective, the year we were promoted the teams that went down are Wigan, Reading & QPR & they've suffered since. The teams that were in the PL in our first season back included Villa, Cardiff, Fulham, Hull, Norwich, Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea & WBA, none of which has 'survived' like we have. Several of those were referred to as "a solid, mid-table club" yet here we are with most not in the PL & the other two just promoted. I think it's reasonable to say that any team outside the top 5 or 6 is susceptible to relegation & they are all running just to stand still (or possibly even accepting their fate already). Benteke squandered chances against Southampton which might have seen us get a ( undeserved ) draw. Then we have last night's penalty... We could be 4 points better off and probably should be. Individual errors are difficult to legislate for particularly when we actually do have a fairly talented team - and the current group are arguably the best we have had in the last six years. Unless we get a Chelsea / Man City type of financial investment, Palace will continue to occupy places in the middle to lower half of the table in the same way that a lot of other clubs do. Just so long as don't finish in that bottom three....

The reality is that the fans (with maybe one or two exceptions) of EVERY club who finishes between 7th and 17th have an expectation of pushing for a top 10 finish the subsequent year. Unfortunately, the boards of these teams typically have the same expectation which is why the managerial turnover is so ridiculous. The financial outlay of teams is also commensurate with everybody trying to kick on. This is even tougher this year because normally the few teams you can expect to struggle and have an "avoid relegation" aspiration are the newly promoted sides and even they have loftier ambitions this year with Fulham and Wolves having spent huge and targeted instant success. The idea of 'stability' for anybody but the top 6 (and maybe Everton) is madness. Case in point is Southampton who qualified for Europe for about 3 consecutive seasons and then last year were on a last minute relegation panic. TL,DR: It's a tough league. We've made massive progress in 5 years, both on and off the pitch. The fact is below the top 6 it is a bit of a lottery and you need to keep improving year on year even to stay up. Look at Swansea, Stoke, Southampton, West Brom - all seen as model mid-table clubs at one point or another - now 3 in the Championship and 1 almost joined them last year. Our squad is lightyears ahead in terms of quality in comparison to the first season in the Prem, and has got better every year. This season we have struggled slightly from losing Cabaye and RLC, and our attacking options look quite poor. As people have said, I don't know what is expected. When we were flying last season, we were the 7th best team in the league - however a lot of clubs have spent massively this summer - Everton, Brighton, Fulham, Wolves, West Ham even Bournemouth. I reckon we are around the 10-12th best team in the league and that is roughly where we'll finish. Not every team can finish in a higher position each season, it's not possible!

I generally echo your sentiment, what could turn the tide is having lost to Bournemouth, we've got top 4 coming up in a row in a game or two, if we were to pick up little to no points from the next 5 or 6, it will turn to panic and this place will meltdown.

I agree we have a come a long way in many respects but on the pitch we are stuttering again and given that we are 7 games in and have only played Liverpool (from the top 6) so far I worry with the fixtures that we have coming up.
