Have we really made progress ?

I think a lot of fans underestime how touch it is to stay in the Premier league. As teams stay up for longer, the expectations of fans grow to want to achieve something that's beyond their means. After they start to want someone that unachievable they clubs start to turn on themselves and become toxic.

There's been 49 premiership clubs. Loads have been in for a season or two, then completely disappeared. Lots have had a boom or bust business model which has distroyed them.

Only 6 teams have never been religated. It's pretty much inevitable that we will at some point. I couldn't find a stat on how many have lasted 6 consecutive seasons but I'm sure it will be lower than people expect.

Going up and staying up was a fluke. Expecting to stay up shows progress.
Building the new stand will make us more competitive.

We just have to be patient and hope we don't mess it up.

How does building a new stand make us more competitive? Revenue from a few thousand extra seats won't add enough extra revenue to make any difference and the work involved in making it happen will take the club managements eye off the ball even more than it is already.

It’s not that long ago we were playing with ten men behind the ball, David Wright in midfield and Jermaine Easter up front..
Clearly there has been considerable progress.
However, as the standard of the players have improved it’s no surprise that expectations are raised.
Parish is a realist and is doing his best.
In my view our scouting department has been found wanting in recent years.
Watford, Southampton and even Brighton seem able to pick up reasonably priced players who make an immediate contribution and have scope, for improvement.
Difficult to think when we have done this in recent times.

too many on this forum atm, we HAVE progressed, when we came up we had Parr and Moxey at left back, now PVA, in the middle Meyer, Luka and Jimmymac over Jedi, KG and O'Keefe, striker-wise it's gone wrong but Parrish has really splashed the cash at times, but of necessity he has become too short-termist, not his intention but that's the way things have panned out, though he has clearly rubbed a few managers up the wrong way, we've been poor and thrown away points this season but this "Parrish has screwed us up" line is so wide of the mark, delays to the new stand? Aren't there always and do we really know how much control he has over the process. As a team we keep possession far better than we could in our first few seasons, for the first 30 min v Wolves we looked like the accomplished premier side and them like an underdog away side trying to snatch something, can some of you not put up with a poor run without throwing your toys? If we get relegated we could fall into the Charlton trap with a load of over paid uninterested players, that's where Parrish may be cuplable, I'd like to see us grooming talent and adding value like Bournemouth do, not expensive fire fighting which is bumping the wage bill up so high, but get one thing clear, Parrish is mainly responsible for the most successful period on our history, some on here are 'so whatting'at the prospect of the new stand, unbelievable, point out SP's failings by all means, but casting him as a failure or a liability is f*cking ridiculous.

Having watched the first half of Leicester vs Arsenal I have come to the conclusion we have clearly regressed this season. Leicester, a team we thrashed not long ago, have played Arsenal off the park with their slick passing, pace and precision. Pretty much everything we fail to demonstrate week in week out. Arsenal have been lucky as they should have conceded a pen and should be playing with 9 men.

brilliant, let's keep Selhurst just the way it is, that's sure to attract ambitious players,
if you fall behind you become less competitive, if you have ambition to stay in the prem you need a prem stadium, there's too much chippy stone throwing on these pages theses days, Parrish is in the arena and he got there by himself, and that's something too many on these pages fail to understand or respect because they could get nowhere near to that themselves, nor could I btw, but I don't need to knock high achievers just bcos I'm not one.

We have had hundreds of millions of pounds thrown at us. I would hope we would have replaced Dean Moxey.

Good you talk about left backs, when Pap Souare had a car accident we didnt have a single other senior left back at the club - how many years was that into SP's reign? That is p&ss poor squad management.

Again after several years if we had not assembled some players who can play a bit more football than Mile Jedinak then Parish would want shooting.

SP has done some things well, and made some good signings hear and there. Vastly outweighing that he has made error after error, recklessly ill equipping the club to compete in the Premier League. Lets review some of those howlers:

1 - When Mandanda left we just forgot to replace him, maybe the post it note fell of SP's desk. Through some lucky miracle Hennessey has actually come good, after we finally get a player in to challenge him....hmmm....coincidence?
2 - We left the Niasse deal (like oh so many) so so late that when it collapsed we had no plan B - remember not having a single fit senior striker at the club?
3 - After a manager search lasting 2 weeks too long Parish hires a manager famous for possession based football with a questionable man management style...oops
3a - Then tweets about unity and then fires the guy after the Burnley game where we should have won 4-0 if our players could actually hit the target
4 - Sorloth, Alex
5 - Inability to hold on to any managers for any length of time
6 - Look at our current attacking options and tell me SP knows who to manage a squad?
7 - Handling of the HF tantrum - secretive, protracted, takes a stand then does a total 180 and no real explanation/discussion with all the affect parties, and a seemingly ballsed up approach to the singing section already
8 - Murray, Glenn

Yes SP has presided over our longest stay in the top flight, but its more through luck than judgement.

No, it’s because he gets more of the big decisions right than wrong, specifically manager appointments.

Untangle your knickers and realise we’ll be ok this season.

I don't want to start another Alan Pardew thread because my dislike for him is absolute!
Man Utd won the FA Cup and sacked their Manager the very next week.
We lost it and gave our Manager a new contract when he had taken 11 points from the previous 19 games!
I think Parish has done okay to be honest but keeping Alan Pardew in a job was where he let emotions take over his business brain.
That man put us back light years!!

In terms of progress i think our playing squad has improved (on paper) than the team that got us promoted. However our fighting spirit has been lost and the spirit the squad had that won us promotion was awesome.

Apart from that we have failed to progress in key areas. Those areas are in the board room. Our recruitment has been hit and miss and mainly panicky, our dealing with managers and their recruitment has been shocking. Our scouting network seems non existent. We lost Stephen Reid a huge loss and replaced him with a cheap option. Yes we have spent money but badly. Beneteke has been poor (polite), Sakho was a Parish purchase to please the fans, Jach- why, Sorloth poor player etc etc.

Its in the corridors of power we need to learn and quickly and we need to stop becoming an old boys club and start becoming a serious business.

It’s because Parish gets the 2nd decision in the season right, after getting the first decision wrong, whether that be hiring, not firing, signing or non signing of players. Each time we’re in dire straits when it was avoidable in August. It ends up costing more money than it originally would’ve done and those additional costs chip away at the average spend allowed per summer and the % of revenue on wages according to FFP rules. Then there’s the lack of continuity issues in the squad. The most obvious one is Benteke last season in a team trying to play triangles through the 2 back lines at SP. Don’t get me started on FDB and his 3-4-3 and Huddersfield debacle. I and the whole sports broadsheet media community were predicting a failure and that’s exactly what happened.

Back to basics now this month. Hopefully it may just suit and help us.
