...sometimes you bottle it, sometimes it doesn’t go where you want. I think Luka wanted it to go to the keepers right but got it all wrong. So much of it comes down to confidence, and that we are lacking.

This it... chances are the keeper is never going to stay stationary in the middle to catch a ball chest high...

However, keepers do their homework and watch run ups, like boxing, they study body positioning and they can pretty much work out by the takers foot work where they are going.

Now, even harder, takers can study the keeper on video to see if they react a certain way to certain styles - so to almost double bluff.

In reality there is probably an area where the keeper cannot reach the ball, regardless - but the prospect of hitting that spot every time, under pressure is tough.

I would say the safest bet, as wide as you can, at head height.

But the margins are so fine and i bet a lot just aim for just off centre... placing it only works if you can bluff.

This was once a quality forum....

Yup, exactly this. Keepers always tend to dive, so as long as you lift the ball when going down the middle the keeper really stands no chance (see Stanislas's penalty against us).

Luka did similar against City which I could forgive due to the circumstances, last minute pen, against the top team in the league. This one not so much, it was an exact replica and something I thought he would of learnt from. Showed a lack of confidence in both penalties but for very different reasons..

Just been reading the section on penalty taking/ game theory in Soccernomics.

Suggests the best takers need a thoroughly randomised policy of where they place their kicks.

Pickford messes with game theory by being a thoroughly unorthodox stopper. His world cup save looked all wrong....went with the wrong hand etc...but the key thing is, he kept the ball out of the goal..rather like he did today.

For all of that, Luca is the best taker we've had for years. We can allow him one miss a season.

He had two last season because letting Benteke take it instead of ypu counts as a fluff.

Seriously though last season Milivojevic' mental strength was immense and this seaaon - well I have a fiestier six-month old kitten.

Yes I agree.

When coaching young keepers, they are told that when they dive in a penalty situation they need to extend their leg as Pickford did so as Milivojevic found it, if you shoot low down the middle there is every chance chance that the ball will hit the keeper's outstretched leg.

I don't think anyone else on the field at the time has taken penalties for us.

So he has missed one a season.

Without being too nerdy on the game theory stuff, this does keep keepers guessing. If by hitting an occasional one down the middle, he then scores every penalty he hits left or right, his stats stay pretty high. Pickford has said he got a bit lucky and nearly broke his foot saving it in unorthodox fashion.

I still struggle to think of a better Palace penalty taker...AJ in 2004 / 05 perhaps. Still have nightmares about standing on the Holmesdale watching Bright, Wright and Pembo all miss in the same game.

If you can’t kick it in the top corner from 12 yards you are not a footballer in my opinion. Your an athlete.

Right footed - goalkeepers top left.
Left footed - goalkeepers top right.
No way the keeper saves it 999 times out of 1000.

Nerves? Nope not valid your paid to kick a ball. Whether it be near the corner flag or kick off or penalty spot. If you can’t kick a ball properly when it’s needed you ain’t a baller. Your an athlete. Or go see a psychiatrist and explain why after 20 years of kicking a ball you feel pressure kicking a ball. They will cuddle you!
Do I feel pressure connecting a socket up-no. Crossing a road-no. Cutting an avocado-no. I know you’ll say it’s not the same but these guys been kicking a ball for how many damn years!!
Makes me so mad watching dead penalties.
Il bet anyone upto £1000 if they want a challenge. Hire a goalie and a pitch I’m there.
And I snapped my Achilles in 2015 and ain’t played a game since. Or taken a penalty. Or felt the ‘pressure’ of a cup final penalty (4/4 scored) or a penalty shoot out to avoid relegation knowing 12 people will lose their job as you’ll lose semi-pro status.
But I’m up for a challenge with pressure equal to what our players feel as pressure.
£1000 loss to me is more pressure than kicking a ball with zero repurcussions. Oh fans are angry. CPFC lose points. Relegation and I have to transfer to another club and area. Ooohhh noooo poor millionaires.
Or I can’t afford food and entertainment for a month!
Absolute joke!!
Grrrr!! Haha

Good strength from Luca today.

Still our best penalty taker.

Who'd have thought we would be the ones to end the goons' winning run?

I think Southgate said in the England World cup preparations they practised taking penalty's with the goalkeeper knowing which way the kick was going. This makes a lot of sense as I think with the quality of pitches and technique a well struck penalty towards the top left or right corner cannot be saved. The execution carry's a greater risk as the shot requires both direction and elevation but I am surprised this is not more widely adopted.

There is 12 yards for the ball to travel. I worked on the basis that if the keeper got anywhere near one of my pens it was going to have to be a good strong hand, or he would be going in the net with it.

I used to welly the ball as hard as I could in the general direction of the goal, I had no idea where it was going, but neither did the keeper, But it would get there bloody quick.

Paul Pogba took 26 steps before he kicked the ball yesterday v Everton.
Over his 5 penalties this season he has averaged 18 steps.
Against Brighton he only took 8 steps - he scored.
