By my reckoning 19 of the 24 are ex premier league. Brentford, Bristol City, Preston, Millwall and Rotherham being the exceptions. So statistically there must be a fair chance that the bottom 3 would be ex premier league.

But it is a tough league and once you fall through the trapdoor, the need to replace players makes it difficult to get back.

There is also a significant peppering of ex prem clubs down in league one

They became MK Dons who are now in the 4th div, as are Oldham, Swindon, Coventry were down there

Portsmouth also ended up in League 2 not so long after being in the Prem. Pride of place has to go to Northampton Town who went from the old Division 1 to Division 4 between 1966 and 1969.

The first season I followed football as a kid, Leeds won the division with Cantona, Lee Chapman, McAllister, Strachan, Speed etc, and Luton, West Ham and Notts County were relegated. Glancing through the final table that year, most teams have dropped to the third tier at some point since.

Of the 22 sides competing in '91, only Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Everton, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and Crystal Palace have stayed in the top two divisions ever since. So despite our annual crisis, we have somehow maintained more stability than most.
