Bloody shame but that's life. It was too much to turn down given his experience although I suspect he will be the England right back within the next 3 or 4 years.
Need to keep Wilf now and get some decent players in to supplement him.

Let that sink in.

We just sold a kid for 50 million quid and he only got a run of games through luck and happenstance rather than the skill of the manager.

Hodgson literally had no other choice than playing the best right back from the academy.

Absolutely.

Isn't it ultimately what an academy at our level is meant to provide - players to enhance your squad thus saving money or those that other teams are willing to pay handsomely for.

The only real difference between a club that has to sell & one that doesn't is what you can demand for your academy products.

I tell you what. If we make a couple of top signings and finish higher in the table than this season I will be he first to say that the sale worked out.

However, you cannot replace a potentially world class defender if you are a team like Palace.

I hope everyone enjoys watching AWB making good wingers look ordinary for United next season while Ward gets done by quality most weeks.

Ward will probably be backup and you still think we should be hanging onto world class right backs when we’re a lower Prem side at best and we have serious issues in attack and attacking midfield.

Do I think it’s a bit early? Maybe. But it’s the opportunity of his life in a short and uncertain career & United really wanted him, so good luck to him.

He truly is a fantastic defender - one of the best in Europe even without the rose tints on and has an impeccable temperament which should hold him in good stead. Will always hold him in a very high regard.

As for us. I am doubtful this 50m will simply be reinvested on players. But considering the fact he was on the periphery of the youth team & got his chance circumstantially, it’s still good business.

I think the one thing we need to take from this is that we *must* start giving youth a chance. We’re in the heart of South London near estates of kids doing nothing but playing football. Our academy really is the one asset we have and we should be utilising it better.

At least one youth player a year getting some first team action has to be the aim from now on.

Gutted for Palace, but gotta be pleased for the lad.

To be honest I think most of us knew that he would go to one of the big clubs, he's been outstanding for us and will be extremely difficult to replace, but we were never going to hold on to him.

I will always give him a cheer and remember him as a short lived but very impressive Palace special one.

Good luck to him, still hope Manure bomb though...

It’s been reported that there is no inclusion of a sell on clause on the AWB deal and no removal of the clause on the Zaha deal.
If this is correct it would seem to me that we have a short term need to get a lot of money in as opposed to taking a longer view.
Taking into account our relatively limited spending in recent windows I am concerned about the clubs finances moving forward.
Freedman’s role seems to be very much about cost cutting and the players we have been linked with this window are again free transfers, potential loans or players with buy out clauses.
I acknowledge that we don’t want to repeat expensive mistakes of the last few years but don’t see why we can’t compete for younger players as e.g Bournemouth did for Brooks and Leicester did for Maddison.

Ultimately, his development will be accelerated by being surrounded by top quality/world class team mates which he isn't gonna get at Palace.

I, for one, hope he fulfills that potential.

We didn't even get the upfront 50 million according to SKY.

I for one hope he has a nightmare at United. I am a Palace fan, not his dad.

Great result for us. Bet there could be a final divi to come knowing SP. Maybe cap the 25% WZ contribution at say £15M? Then sell him in two years for £125M when Wilf has helped us win the europa cup!!

Virtually all deals are money in instalments.

Next you’ll be outraged because they didn’t put a whole seasons worth of water on the pitch in one go.
