Can't believe no one has mentioned Ronnie Hazlehurst.

His soundtrack CV is like a who's who of BBC sitcoms from the 70s and 80s.

He pretty much did the lot.

Beat me to it. The best film score ever IMHO is of course Star Wars.

I like Shore's music for the Lord of the Rings films a lot but perhaps because I'm such a Tolkien fan.

the chap that wrote 'the long good friday' theme , although no other film scores to credit, was an excellent big band sound & jazz perfomer.
cannot remember his name now, but he had a huge collection released only a year or 2 ago.
very good, a lot of it.
worth a look.
