There was an interesting article in the Times about Roy running the risk of alienating fans with his defensive approach.
How Jorginho was free to dictate play without Palace laying a glove on him because of the timid attitude.
Roy seems almost proud that we restricted their opportunities, ignoring that the object of the game is also to try and score.
At the end of last season we got the attacking and defensive balance correct.
This season only against Burnley have we had a consistent attacking threat and Roy has to take some responsibility for these failings.
Our best player is Zaha and we totally waste his skills playing him as a target man, often with his back to goal and surrounded by defenders.
Surely Roy can see this.

Hogdson obviously favoured the 5 in midfield and the lone striker. He would have of course known that this was not Zaha's ideal position but what were his alternatives ? Start with Wickham or Ayew ?

Yes I would prefer Wickham in this role.
It totally negates Zaha’s strengths to,play him there.
Zaha could have taken a wide role if Roy wanted to play a 5 in midfield.
Mcarthur, Kouyate and Luka already were providing enough defensive cover in midfield.
I find this constant reference to not having enough options irritating and not an adequate excuse for playing people in incorrect positions.

Wonder if townsend would be better than wilf up front in his own. He's a very energetic player and willing to shoot from anywhere.

No. He would have his back to goal and doesn't have the physical presence to hold the ball up.

When I saw Newcastle do that against Chelsea and predictably lose I said I hoped I never saw a Palace team show so little enterprise, spirit and positivity at 0 - 0.

Well that was worse.

I feel Chelsea are simply just too good for us and Newcastle nothing to do with our performances, Chelsea just made us play that way.

No probs mate game of opinions.

The point I was trying to make is that Wickham is the only CF we have available who is near good enough but he isn’t ready to start games. Our opponents know we’re unlikely to have a target man or little physical / aerial threat from the outset and have luxury of setting up accordingly.

I’ve read a lot of people saying after the game that we should have taken the game to Chelsea, and I agree we were very unadventurous, but who are the players that are going to do this apart from Zaha ? When we played them last year we were forced to improvise by Benteke’s injury and took them by surprise playing Wilf (who was returning from injury) and Townsend up front.

I take your point, but wickham will never get fit if we don't keep playing him, its surly going to take quite a few games after such a long lay off.

But Roy can't START Wickham after just having a few minutes of playing time, well he could do,but he wouldn't last until half time

I was at the game on Sunday and lucky enough to be sitting in the directors box. The anger towards SP was so clear with supporters screaming at him to sign a striker and he could clearly hear it.

Likewise supporters were shouting at Roy to bring on Wickham and Meyer as soon as Chelsea scored and he just stood there biting his nails...

Who’s to blame... both!

What must Roy be seeing in the training that 20 odd thousand fans on a match day are not seeing, that makes him keep the faith with this shocking system. Surely he needs to start with Wickham now even if he only lasts half a game. At least we would have wilf in his best position and we could go at the opposition from the first whistle.

The FA Cup game against Grimsby on Saturday, is the equivalent of England v Iceland, and we know what happened there. The manager needs to get this right and play a decent squad to absolutely batter them.

At the moment I blame both parties, the board for not getting the transfer policy right and Roy for not picking a team to win a game. It’s been well documented that he leaves substitutions till it’s too late. If he leaves it till 10 minutes from time before Connor Wickham comes on how on earth can he influence a game or get match sharpness.

We can’t piss about anymore...
